Scammers in High School Sports?

With everyone so focused on the big football games this weekend, it might be easy to forget that we are in the heart of basketball season. Tonight there are a couple of games that I am going to try to watch personally.

Most importantly, my niece is playing an away game with her high school team. The hope is that the away site will be streaming the game, but you can't always count on that. I really wish that the state athletic association would mandate a specific platform. It would make things a lot easier for us as spectators.

There is a good chance I am going to need to be searching around online to find out where the game is being broadcast (if it is being broadcast). This is always a bit scary because there are lots of scammers out there.

Believe it or not, what these scammers do is they go to a certain high school and they look to see when all of their games are for a specific sporting event. Then they place all of these videos on YouTube and they say you can watch the game here, just click this link to subscribe now. People not knowing any better, go to the link put in their card info, make the payment, and boom the money is gone and they never get to watch the game.

It's sad really. You would think that high school sports could be free from this kind of corruption and dishonesty. Apparently not!

There are literally dozens of sites for any given event trying to scam you in this way. It's horrible.

Anyway, let's get to a recap of the week.

Tuesday night gave us eight games in the top 25 men's college basketball world. Wisconsin bounced back from their loss(es?) last week and they beat Minnesota 61 to 59. Texas had a big upset of #11 Oklahoma 75 to 60, and #6 Kentucky also got upset by South Carolina 79 to 62.

Wednesday night gave us another seven games in the top 25. Alabama upset #8 Auburn 79 to 75, and Northwestern upset #10 Illinois 96 to 91 in overtime. That makes me feel a little less bad about Northwestern beating Michigan State earlier in the season.

The other upset on Wednesday night was Nevada over #24 Colorado State 77 to 64. Those are some big upsets so far this week. It's not even like they were close games. Those ranked teams got blown out of the water!

With a few exceptions.

Thursday night gave us one game in the top 25 and it was a huge upset of Oregon State over #9 Arizona 83 to 80. It's a bit hard to believe that Arizona used to be sitting easily in the number 1 spot in the NCAA. It just goes to show you how tough the competition is this year.

Tonight there is only one ranked game and it is Michigan State versus #13 Wisconsin in Madison. Another road win for the Spartans would be huge here. Especially against a ranked team. I will be watching earnestly to see if they can accomplish that feat.

The Spartans seem to have found a spark of life, but I am not sure it is going to be enough to carry them to the post season. They need a good run through the end of the year to have a chance of playing in March.

Saturday there are seventeen top 25 games on which means there will likely be not many games on Sunday. You're going to be watching football anyway though right?

That Clemson/Duke game could be a good watch tomorrow. I'd also keep an eye on the #7 Kansas vs. #23 Iowa State game. I might put money down on that one.

Finally, you might want to check out #9 Arizona vs. Oregon. That could be a big upset at home for The Ducks.

Sunday there are five top 25 games on the schedule. If you can stay up late enough maybe watch the Nevada/New Mexico game. Assuming football isn't still on that is!

Sort:

scamming people out of a high school basketball game. That's a new low. Do you personally know anyone that has been conned by this?

Sadly yes, my mother in law. I means it's usually less than $20, but if you get enough people to bite, then it can be lucrative. They probably use AI to generate all the sites and promotion videos.

You can't really trust anything anymore. I've become more of a "cash guy" lately because of this. Always preying on the elderly too, that has always been true. I hope there is a special place in hell for people like this.

Yeah, I totally agree with you there. It's crazy too how easily they can forget that it might be a scam. I've seen people get scammed that I never in a million years would have thought they could fall for something like that.

Cheaters cause great harm in sports as it spoils the entire game.Out of two teams, one team wins but the game of basketball is great

It's not my favorite, but I like it better than some other sports!
