Suicidal Appointment

I am sure those of you that follow football know about Bayern Munich chasing Vincent Kompany to take over as their next manager. The problem is Kompany has not proven himself and highlights how desperate Bayern Munich are right now. All of their preferred choices declined the position which is rather telling for Germany's most successful club. At one stage whoever was in charge was guaranteed of winning the league.

What has prompted such a drastic choice must be fueled by what Bayer Leverkusen's new manager Xabi Alonso has achieved by winning the German League this year. Alonso however is very different to Kompany with the experience he has having played under so many top managers plus having coached B teams and youth teams in the past before his Leverkusen appointment. Alonso is the exception and for every managerial hopeful the percentages are very low under 5% for those making a success this early on in their careers.

Kpmpany coached Anderlecht before moving to Burnley who were in the Championship and were promoted to the Premiership, but have gone straight back down being relegated under his supervision. This is not exactly a track record that speaks of success because he has failed at his job. Apparently he speaks German which is the only box I can see him ticking if we were being brutally honest.

This kind of reminds me of the Frank Lampard, Wayne Rooney, Steven Gerrard and Gary Neville appointments when they had no managerial experience and failed miserably. Some are calling this a 50/50 gamble by going with Kompany, but I see it as worse odds than that being a 10/90 split with failure written all over this.

Chelsea have parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino who had started to turn the club around and by all accounts was expected to stay on next season. Chelsea with only 1 defeat in their last 14 matches and that was a loss to Arsenal tells you the team was on the rise. Utter madness to get rid of Pochettino after the seasons they have had previously and why no one can take this club seriously.

Clubs are looking towards what Mikel Arteta has done at Arsenal, but they are forgetting one thing besides his age and that he worked under Pep Guardiola as an assistant coach for 3 seasons. This was where Arteta learned everything from planning and tactics to man management.

José Mourinho took a different path and was a translator for Bobby Robson at Sporting and Porto before working as an assistant coach under Robson and Louis van Gaal at Barcelona. This was over a number of years and never took charge of a team before he was deemed ready.

Football clubs is big business especially for the major clubs like Bayern Munich and it seems they are destined for the rocky road that Manchester United have been on for the last decade or two. The bigger you are the harder you fall and there are few bigger than these two clubs. Finding a manager for any of these two clubs let alone players is hard enough because they are not seen as the golden chalice they once were.

It could be a bit rushed but Bayern Munich's board knows a few things about football.... Look Thiago Motta's Boulogne now.

Meanwhile my team Benfica is keeping Roger Schmidt after a pretty bad season. I wish Bayern had gone for him so that he would leave without cost for us and we could start fresh!
