Game Week 38: Who Has the Most to Play For?

With one more week to go until the close of the current Premier League season, a lot is on the line in the upper quarter of the table and at the bottom as well.

Newcastle have since sealed their place in the Champions League next season after a home draw against relegation fodder, Leicester. Brighton, on the other hand, seem set to qualify for the Europa League after smashing a poor Southampton, who have since been relegated.

Elsewhere, Manchester United are playing at home against Chelsea, where they will be hoping to secure at least a point which will be enough to see them confirm their Champions League spot. This will effectively relegate a resurgent Liverpool into the Europa League; fitting retribution for that unforgettable 7-0 drubbing.

However, while these contests will be enthralling to watch, the meat on the bone will be the final matches on Sunday evening.

There are two main battles:

1: Europa Conference League Qualification.
2: A 90+ minute relegation scrap.

1: Europa Conference League Qualification

Fixtures: [Aston Villa vs Brighton] [Brentford vs Man City] [Leeds vs Spurs]

While it is difficult to imagine teams fighting to qualify for the Conference League, surely this competition represents a realistic opportunity for silverware for teams like Villa, Brentford and, I dare say, Tottenham.

Therefore, none of these teams will be turning their noses up to this grand opportunity despite their difficult final fixture.

While Spurs may seem to have the easiest match, Leeds, who will be needing all three points, will be fighting and scrapping for everything. Spurs may need to be at their all-time best to avoid an embarrassing end to the season.

2: Relegation Escape

Once again, the script writers have conspired to bring us a spicy end to the season, albeit on the tail end of the table. There must be a clause in the Premier League that guarantees that relegation battles must not be concluded until the final game of the season.

Fixtures: [Everton vs Bournemouth] [Leeds vs Spurs] [Leicester vs West Ham]

Everton, Leicester City and Leeds find themselves in a situation where they have to win their final game to confirm their Premier League status. Leicester and Leeds will be hoping to win their games and praying Everton capitulate to have a chance at surviving the chop.

Who will handle their business? Who will hold their nerve?

We'll find out on Super Sunday!
