Yeah, I thought so too. But what I think was they were trying to see if retaining Messi would work out. I heard they wanted to sell Antonio Griezmann to reduce their wage bill so that Messi can stay but it was unsuccessful. And may be it was intentional to release Messi because of his huge salary, the president and some officials know the damn truth of the Messi saga.
