Zidane was right about Bale

Gareth Bale left his nightmare at Real Madrid this summer, and several English media outlets suggested that it was a good opportunity for Bale to revive a career that had stalled to such an extent in Spanish. Several of the English media believed that Real Madrid coach Zinedine Zidane was just running a personal hetz against the Welshman.

Several months later, however, it seems that Zidane was right. Bale is no longer the player he once was. Zidane saw it no one else saw, namely that the Welshman's best days were long gone. Back in 2019, the Frenchman was even out with a rather sharp criticism of Bale:

If he travels tomorrow, it will be the best, Zidane told Spanish media according to Goal.

Tottenham fans were thrilled with the prospect of getting one of their favorites back, but the Welshman has yet to really convince manager Jose Mourinho that he is worth betting on. On Thursday when Tottenham lost 0-1 to Chelsea, Bale watched the entire match from the bench. A bench he has seen more of than expected.

So perhaps the English media was too quick with their criticism of Zidane's lack of faith in Gareth Bale. Mourinho is also looking for Bale's best right now. He expressed this at the press conference after the team's defeat on Thursday, when he was asked why Bale did not come in:

A good question, but it does not deserve an answer. Gareth tries his best. Everyone is trying to do their best.

Bale's career has thus not been revived to that extent, and this was perhaps foreseen by Zidane, who is probably satisfied that the Welshman is no longer part of Madrid's squad.

Sort:

Bale's a good player but his mind isn't focused on football.
