Hey there, it hasn't been that long since we last talked about soccer, right? Maybe a few weeks, but there have been some important matches during that time. Of course, I'm talking about my favorite team, Galatasaray. But I've decided that league matches aren't that important, so I'll be sharing fewer posts about them from now on. Instead, I might share a post after every Champions League match because that's where success matters for Galatasaray now.
On Wednesday evening, Galatasaray played Bodo Glimt in Istanbul. Everyone expected Galatasaray to win, but last year and the year before, Galatasaray always had problems against weaker teams. We were eliminated by Young Boys in the Champions League qualifiers, which was disappointing; we lost to or drew with very weak teams in Europe. That's why many fans, myself included, were concerned. Still, we started the match well and took the lead in the 3rd minute.
An early goal changes the course of the match because everyone plans based on a draw at the start. When you're behind, you have to do something different. Bodo Glimt tried to do something, but I think Galatasaray played magnificently in the first half and went into halftime with a 2-0 lead. The second half began, and especially after the goal scored in the 60th minute, the match was over for Galatasaray. I don't think Bodo felt the same way. Galatasaray gave away so many chances in the remaining 30 minutes that the match could have ended in a draw, but the defense line did a fantastic job, and Bodo was very inept. They couldn't capitalize on any of the chances. As a result, the match ended with a 3-1 lead.
I follow a few sports commentators on social media, and they say Galatasaray had a magnificent victory and played the right game in Europe. I have my doubts about that. I think Galatasaray played wonderfully in the first half, but in the second half, they made mistakes in defense and left the midfield exposed. Without some critical interventions, the match could have ended with a very different score, which could have been traumatic for the players. It's good that it didn't turn out that way, but it's something to think about. Liverpool or even a much weaker team could have capitalized on the same positions and scored a few goals against Galatasaray. That's why I'm concerned.
Well, there were also many positive things for Galatasaray in that match. Leroy Sane, in particular, was well below expectations but had a tremendous game. In my opinion, Osimhen, Lemina, and Sane were the stars of the match. Even though he didn't contribute to the score, his dribbling caused the opposing defense a lot of trouble and cooled the game down nicely. After all, Galatasaray's problem is scoring at the right moment.
Well, there were also many positive things for Galatasaray in that match. Leroy Sane, in particular, was well below expectations but had a tremendous game. In my opinion, Osimhen, Lemina, and Sane were the stars of the match. Even though he didn't contribute to the score, his dribbling caused the opposing defense a lot of trouble and cooled the game down nicely. Galatasaray's problem is that they can't break the opponent's momentum at the right moment. If the opponent is attacking you and you somehow get the ball, you shouldn't lose possession for too long to stop their momentum. You can do this either by passing the ball or by having a player dribble and make the entire opposing team run back. That's exactly what Sane did. Even in the 85th minute, he dribbled in a way that tired out the opposing team, breaking their momentum.
Another thing that stood out in the match was Abdülkerim's incredible interventions and cutting off many attacks by being in the right place at the right time. This shows how smart he is defensively. You can't always follow the player next to you, especially if they're faster than you. But if you stand at the right angle and intercept the ball, that player's speed becomes irrelevant.
