Klay Thompson: Golden State Warriors’ star NBA’s greatest shooter ; a shy soul off the court

Klay Thompson hasn’t played a game so far this season but that doesn’t mean he totally misses being out of the spotlight. In fact, he’s likely enjoying the lack of attention that’s on him.

Thompson may be one of the greatest NBA shooters in history. He may also be one of the shyest too, the type of person who was often too shy to raise his hands in class.

“There were not too many words you were going to get out of Klay Thompson,” his high school team’s assistant coach Craig DeBusk, said of Thompson.

“Very shy, reserved, introverted by nature.”, DeBusk continued.

But just because Klay is shy it doesn’t mean that he’s got nothing interesting to say. When he does talk, he dishes out some very memorable lines.

In 2016 just after Kevin Durant signed with the Warriors, Thompson caused a stir when he told
The Vertical’s Shams Charania“I’m not sacrificing sh!t, because my game isn’t changing.”

He wasn’t wrong. In Durant’s first season, Thompson’s stats across most categories was on par with his career averages. His points (22.3) and shot attempts (17.6) per game where even career highs.

The season would be a successful one for the Warriors as they won a championship which included a 16-1 playoff record.

“I was never a Draymond Green type”

At the 2016 Rio Olympics Games, Klay shared with us some third world problems. “When you’re overseas and on a trip for awhile, it’s tough to stay groomed,” Klay said perhaps as a shout out to Gillette. “You miss your routine”.

In 2018 Klay was asked his thoughts if the Warriors were building momentum. “Yeah, it’s building. It’s building like a … I don’t know. It’s building really well.”, Thompson said as he failed to find a simile to match.

Thompson isn’t one who enjoys the cameras and can be totally uncomfortable around them, but he’s not afraid to admit it. “I was never a Draymond Green type,” Thompson told the Complex.

Just last month Warriors president of basketball operations Bob Myers recalled how untalkative Klay was when he dined with him around the time he got drafted.

“He barely said a word. He barely said anything,” Myers told Tim Kawakami of The Athletic. “He’s looking down at his plate. Couldn’t tell if he was shy, insecure, scared”.

Klay seems to have been shy from when he was a kid. When he was 7, his father, former NBA center Mychal Thompson took Klay and his two brothers to shake hands with Kobe Bryant and Shaquille O’Neal.
