On Wednesday at 9 at night, I was getting ready to go to the pharmacy to buy some medicine when I started the car and began to hear an unusual sound. Without turning off the car, I opened the hood and could hear that it was coming from the belt area. I thought it was the alternator belt or the power steering belt, but to my surprise, it was coming from the timing belt. When I pressed on the belt cover, the sound stopped, so I parked the car and decided to take a look.
La correa del tiempo nos dio un susto pero la ayuda de un amigo se solucionó
El dia miercoles a las 9 de la noche me preparaba para salir a la farmacia a comprar una medicina, cuando enciendo el carro comienzo a escuchar un sonido inusual, si apagar el carro abro el capó y se escucha que proviene de la zona de las correas, pensé que era la del alternador o la de la bomba hidráulica, pero para mi sorpresa provenía de la correo del tiempo, cuando presionaba la tapa de la correa deja de sonar, asi que guarde el carro y me dispuse a revisar.
At that time of night, barely able to see with the help of my phone's flashlight, I managed to remove the timing belt cover. I started the car and noticed that the belt was moving outwards, almost about to come off. The belt goes through the two camshaft sprockets, a pulley, the tensioner, and finally the damper. Everything looked fine at first glance, but it was night, and I needed to check thoroughly.
A esa hora de la noche, casi sin poder ver con la ayuda de la linterna del teléfono, logre quitar la tapa de la correa de tiempo, encendí el carro y note que la correa se desplaza hacia afuera, casi a punto de salirse. La correa pasa por los dos piñones de los árboles de levas, una polea, el tensor, y finalmente el damper, todo se veía bien a simple vista pero era de noche y había que revisar a fondo.
The next day, my good friend Angel Peñate arrived. He's always very willing to help, very helpful, and skilled in mechanics. With his help, the wheel, the pulley in front of the damper, and the lower belt cover were removed. That's how we were able to determine that the belt tensioner had broken, specifically the plastic part around it. With my friend's help, we went to look for a tensioner around noon on Holy Thursday when almost no one works.
Al dia siguiente llego mi buen amigo Angel Peñate, el siempre muy dispuesto a ayudar es muy servicial y es una persona hábil en la mecánica, con su ayuda se saco la rueda, la polea frente al danper y la para de la correa que está debajo, fue así que pudimos determinar que el tensor de la correa se había roto, específicamente la parte plástica que tiene alrededor. Con la ayuda de mi amigo salimos a buscar un tensor a casi al mediodía el jueves de semana santa donde casi nadie trabaja.
I ended up buying a non-original tensioner, so I have to be very attentive to its operation. I also bought the power steering belt because we noticed it was about to give way. We started to disassemble, and Ángel quickly removed the pulley and the tensioner, but not before securing the two camshaft sprockets and locking the crankshaft to avoid losing the engine timing, as it is floating.
Termine comprando un tensor que no es original, asi que debo estar muy atento a su funcionamiento, tambien compre la correa de la bomba hidráulica, porque notamos que estaba ya a punto de ceder. Comenzamos a desarmar y Ángel sacó rápidamente la polea y el tensor, no sin antes sujetar los dos piñones de los árboles de levas y trancar el cigüeñal, a fin de no perder la posición del tiempo del motor, ya que esta es flotante.
After assembling and testing by moving the engine to ensure there was no valve hitting a cylinder, we tried to start the vehicle, and it didn't start. It had lost its timing; the cylinders weren't compressing, and we didn't know why since we had secured everything. We thought that perhaps the locking pliers we used to hold the two camshaft sprockets weren't enough, and it had skipped a tooth.
Luego de armar y probar moviendo el motor que no hubiera golpe de valvula con algun cilindro, intentamos encender el vehículo y no lo hizo, perdió el tiempo los cilindros no comprimian y no sabíamos porque si habíamos asegurado todo, pensamos que quizás el alicate de presión que pusimos para sujetar los dos piñones de los árboles de levas no0 fue suficiente y se corrio un diente.
At that time of the afternoon, I was already exhausted, but my friend encouraged me to disassemble and set the car to time. So, he went to a mechanic friend and got a tool used to place behind the camshafts to fix them in place so they wouldn't move, while I disassembled, having to remove the intake manifold and the valve cover. My wife went with my friend to buy a valve cover gasket and some silicone. Thank God there was still a spare parts shop open.
A esa hora de la tarde ya estaba agotado, pero mi amigo me animo a desarmar y poner el carro a tiempo, así que él salió a donde un amigo mecanico y consigue una pieza que se usa para colocar detrás de los árboles de levas a fin de fijarlos y no se muevan, mientras yo desarmaba, tenia que quitar la distribucion de admision y el tapa valvulas. Mi esposa fue con mi amigo para comprar una empacadura de tapa valvula y un silicón, gracias a Dios aun había una venta de repuestos abierta.
We managed to secure everything, put the camshafts in position and prevent them from moving with the wedge my friend brought. The pistons were in position thanks to the damper having a mark that should be at the 3 o'clock position, and also, under the starter motor, there is a plug that you remove to insert a wedge and lock the crankshaft. We put the tensioner and the belt back on and proceeded to assemble, put on the new gasket, tightened everything, and started it again.
Logramos asegurar todo, poner los arboles de levas en posición y que no se movieran con la cuña que trajo mi amigo, los pistones en posición gracias a que el damper tiene una marca que debe estar en posición de las agujas del reloj a las 3, además debajo del motor de arranque hay un tapón que al retirar para poner una cuña y fijar el cigüeñal. Colocamos de nuevo el tensor y la correa y procedimos armar, colocamos la nueva empacadura, ajustamos todos y encendimos de nuevo.
The car was in time, and we managed to overcome this adversity on the same day. We also took the opportunity to improve the connection of the MAP sensor, which gave me an error code every time I scanned the car. We scanned the car after testing and adjusting everything, and it didn't show any error codes. We finished after 9 o'clock last night, more than 12 hours of work.
Quedó en tiempo el carro, logramos superar esta adversidad el mismo día, además aprovechamos para mejorar la conexión del sensor MAP que cada vez que escaneaba el carro me arrojaba el código de error. Escaneamos el carro despues de probar y ajustar todo y no arrojo ningun codigo de error, terminamos pasadas las 9 de la noche del dia de ayer, más de 12 horas trabajando.
I am very grateful to my friend for his support; without him and his skills, it wouldn't have been possible. The day before, the worries had me very tense because next week we have to attend to family medical matters that require us to travel to several places, and losing the convenience of doing it by car would be even more costly due to transportation expenses.
Agradezco mucho a mi amigo por su apoyo, sin él y sus habilidades no hubiera sido posible, yo el dia anterior las preocupaciones me tenían muy tenso porque la semana que viene hay que atender asuntos médicos en la familia que requieren movernos a varios lugares y perder la comodidad de hacerlo el en carro seria incluso más costo por el pago del transporte.

Cualquier falla que venga de la correa del tiempo es un inconveniente delicado porque de ello dependen muchas partes del motor. A mi se me han roto dos correas y eso me dañó las válvulas. Por suerte te diste cuenta antes que se saliera la correa
Este carro doblo válvula porque de me fue la correa una vez, eso fue lección aprendida, por eso apenas escuché el ruido no lo rode más, estaba rosando la tapa de la correa
