There is a popular saying that goes: “In a blacksmith's house, wooden spoons”. That does not only apply for a blacksmith’s house, it does for a builder, a mechanic, an electrician house too, and so on.
Hay un dicho popular que dice: "En casa de herrero, cucharas de palo". Esto no sólo se aplica a la casa de un herrero, sino también a la de un albañil, un mecánico, un electricista, etc.
Well, with this hot weather we have been having, and with the air conditioner not finished yet, I just relied on one of my sons’ electric fan to refresh myself either when working on my PC in my room, or when doing a particular task. Though they are my sons and anyone could say that I have the right to borrow from them whatever is needed and for as long as it is needed too, I am a person that tries to manage things by myself, (except when it comes to prepare elaborate meals) trying to be self-sufficient, not to bother others as much as possible.
Pues bien, con este calor que hemos tenido, y con el aire acondicionado aún sin terminar, sólo he dependido del ventilador eléctrico de uno de mis hijos para refrescarme, ya sea cuando trabajo en mi PC en mi habitación, o cuando hago alguna tarea en particular. Aunque son mis hijos y cualquiera podría decir que tengo derecho a tomar prestado de ellos lo que sea necesario y por el tiempo que sea necesario, soy una persona que trata de manejar las cosas por mí misma, (excepto cuando se trata de preparar comidas elaboradas) tratando de ser autosuficiente, para no molestar a los demás tanto como sea posible.
Probably I am not an expert on repairing electric devices, but for sure I give them a try. Let me tell you, it was not the case this time. Back around august, last year, my youngest son’s electric fan just stopped working. At that time, he told me it had some sort of grinding noise. I disassembled it apart, did some cleaning, lubricating the front and back bushings. In general, I could say I performed preventive or corrective maintenance. After putting it back together, it just did not turn, though I had made sure it was smooth to turn. In short, it just did not work. At that time, it did not seem to be a priority to work on since my son’s room air conditioner was working properly. Here the introductory saying applied to me “In a blacksmith house, you find wooden spoons”
Probablemente no soy un experto en la reparación de aparatos eléctricos, pero seguro que lo intento. Pero permítanme decirles que esta vez no fue así. En agosto del año pasado, el ventilador eléctrico de mi hijo menor dejó de funcionar. En ese momento, me dijo que tenía una especie de ruido que parecia estuviese moliendo piedras. Lo desarmé, lo limpié y lubriqué los bujes delanteros y traseros. En general, podría decir que realicé un mantenimiento preventivo o correctivo. Después de armarlo nuevamente, simplemente no giraba, a pesar de que me había asegurado de que este girase libremente. En resumen, simplemente no funcionaba. En ese momento no parecía ser una prioridad en la cual trabajar ya que el aire acondicionado de la habitación de mi hijo funcionaba correctamente. Aquí se me aplicaba el refrán introductorio "En casa de herrero, cucharas de palo"
It was not till fairly recently that the need to have something blowing air on me became so desperate that I remembered that electric fan, and decided to have a proper look at it, so that I could decide whether to repair it or to put it into the trash container and make some more space available. Having said that I got down to business.
No fue hasta hace poco que la necesidad de tener algo que me soplara aire se hizo tan desesperante que me acordé de aquel electroventilador, y decidí darle un mejor vistazo para poder decidir si lo reparaba o lo metía en el contenedor de la basura y hacer algo más de espacio. Dicho esto me puse manos a la obra.
I took off the grills and the blade assembly.

In fact, I took everything apart, the axle, caps or lids, leaving the windings unveiled to have a proper look at, and do some testing to find out whether they were grounded, open or short circuited. In order to do so I drew a schematic of the possible electric circuit for this electric fan.
De hecho, desmonté todo, el eje, las tapas, dejando los bobinados al descubierto para mirarlos bien, y hacer algunas pruebas para saber si estaban conectados a tierra, abiertos o en cortocircuito. Para ello dibujé un esquema del posible circuito eléctrico de este electroventilador.

The first was a continuity test from positions 1, 2, and 3 in the “Three-speed Switch” at the right-up corner of the diagram, to the brown wire at the bottom of it. These tests displayed on the screen of the multimeter “OL” which means “Out of Limit”. In other words, there was an open circuit along.
La primera prueba fue una de continuidad desde las posiciones 1, 2 y 3 del "Interruptor de Tres Velocidades" en la esquina superior derecha del diagrama, hasta el cable marrón en la parte inferior del mismo. Estas pruebas mostraron en la pantalla del multímetro "OL" que significa "Out of Limit". En otras palabras, había un circuito abierto a lo largo.

Since the only common wire to every one of these three positions tested, was the black wire connected to the capacitor, (bottom of the diagram) one way to by-pass this wire physically was to unpeel the two black wires of the capacitor and carry out a continuity test from these capacitor wires. Here a reading was obtained, meaning that there was no open circuit in the starting windings nor in the speed windings.
Dado que el único cable común a cada una de estas tres posiciones probadas, era el cable negro conectado al condensador, (parte inferior del diagrama) una forma de puentear este cable físicamente era pelar los dos cables negros del condensador y realizar una prueba de continuidad desde estos cables del condensador. Aquí se obtuvo una lectura, lo que significa que no había ningún circuito abierto en los devanados de arranque ni en los de velocidad.

How is it to be understood? Well, every circuit has a protecting bimetallic thermic device which opens when the flow of current is over the nominal current for which the circuit was designed. This is usually located in that part of the circuit that is common to every branch of such circuit. According to the diagram, the common part of this circuit is the connection after the capacitor, in other words, the brown wire. This thermic protection, once cooled off, it closes and the circuit is operative again. However, when the condition for high current remains, it blows similarly to a fuse and has to be replaced.
¿Cómo se puede entender esto? Pues bien, todo circuito tiene un dispositivo térmico bimetálico de protección que se abre cuando el flujo de corriente supera el valor nominal de corriente para el que fue diseñado el circuito. Este dispositivo suele estar situado en la parte del circuito que es común a todas las ramas del mismo. Según el esquema, la parte común de este circuito es la conexión posterior al condensador, es decir, el cable marrón. Esta protección térmica, una vez fria, se cierra y el circuito vuelve a estar operativo. Sin embargo, cuando se la condición de corriente alta se mantiene, se funde de forma similar a un fusible y tiene que ser sustituido.
Once the part of the circuit was eliminated, what was left to do was to make a jumper between the ground or neutral connection coming from the mains and one wire of the capacitor that I had already peeled off. Depending on the capacitor lead chosen to make the jumper, the fan would turn clockwise or anti-clockwise. I had just to select the one that would make the fan turn blowing air. To test before assembling the fan all together, I just wrapped around the axle a piece of adhesive tape to visualize which sense it was turning.
Una vez eliminada esa parte del circuito, lo que quedaba por hacer era un puente entre la conexión de tierra o neutro que viene de la red eléctrica y un cable del condensador que ya había pelado. Dependiendo del cable del condensador elegido para hacer el puente, el ventilador giraría en sentido de las agujas del reloj o en sentido contrario. Sólo tenía que seleccionar el que hiciera que el ventilador girara soplando aire. Para probar antes de reensamblar el ventilador, simplemente coloque alrededor del eje un trozo de cinta adhesiva para visualizar en que sentido giraba.
Once everything was reassembled, taking care nothing was missing, I must say that a sense of gratitude, a feeling of joyce invaded me.
I must conclude by saying that “When in a blacksmith’s house there are only wooden spoons it is because he does not put his mind and efforts to the service of his family”

Excelente reparación, no todos dan con este tipo de fallas y desechan un ventilador que aún tiene vida y ayuda en los tiempos de mucho calor.

Hola, solo hay que tener paciencia a la hora de buscar la solución a estos electrodomésticos, hay que darles una nueva oportunidad de arreglarlos antes de tirarlos a la basura.

Este es un refran muy comun, lo digo como trabajador de lavanderia, no sabes lo ironico que es que no tenga lavadora funcional sino que lavo en el negocio, solo para ahorrarme un par de dolares, pero que tranquilamente puedo mover una del negocio a la casa, para que la usemos mi madre y nosotros, pero no, a final nunca lo hacemos, lavamos todos en el negocio, que cosas ¿No? En casa de herrero, cuchillo e palo dicen en Maracaibo.

Como se aplica ese refran a nuestra manera de proceder. Totalmente entiendo tu posición. Cuando sabemos que podemos resolver alguna dificultad, nos limitamos a realizarlo de esa manera en lugar de establecer la comodidad. Actualmente la llave de la regadera de mi ducha esta averiada y sucedio mientras tomaba un baño por lo que tuve que implementar una accion rapida. Por ello tome un alicate y la cerre. Bueno, en lugar de cambiarla ya uso el alicate con normalidad. Por ello entiendo totalmente lo de la lavadora..

Es mas facil... y nos adaptamos a ello que es lo peor, en vez de solucionarlo como debe ser, ojala un dia sea mas dificil y hacer las reparaciones correctas sea lo mas facil. Saludos y un fuerte abrazo.
