ooooof towing a automatic transmission... yeah that can be critical.. However it's always repairable!
I myself have one of the newer Ford Focus transmissions. The DCT250 which is actually a electrically shifted manual transmission. I wonder what would happen if I were to tow it.
If they kept the speeds low it might not have done anything, higher speeds mess it up badly

If towing automatics off ends in catastrophe, the problem is lubrication.
