One of the top features of man is the ability to think, this feature makes a man rational in it choices among all the alternatives in life.
Sometimes we make plans and set a goal for our self to achieve, it might be long term or short term. But in all, it's dependent on time for us to make our dreams come through or achieve our goals.

Here comes where time plays a major role in our life. Our education, activities, and even our whole entire life (life span) revolves with time.
The only difference to make of this constantly moving time is how we make use of it, the things we achieved, the quality of life we lived within this limited time each and everyone of us have.
There is a popular saying that

Time waits for nobody.
Time heals, time breaks...

And other sayings that goes like that.

Definition of terms:
Time is the measure of the period/duration at which an event take place.
Life Goal something that someone aspires to achieve in life especially within a specified time.

With the two definition above we can dive in to the main context of this article.
In life if I'm not mistaking, every human being has a goal he/she dreams or aspires to achieve. We strive to make our dreams come to reality, struggle everyday to make sure that at the end of the day we have something to show for.
A popular speaker says :

Dreams are those things that doesn't allow us to sleep not those things that we see when we sleep.

Some people's dreams may be to get a good paying job, to see themselves graduate from school, pass exams, live a better life, build a good house and have a comfortable home, find a good love and enjoy peace that follows, get promoted, aspire for a position and emerge the winner, start up a business, become successful in it and lots more...
All these are most of our goals and things that always beat around in our hearts and minds.

In all of this, our heart comes at peace when we finally arrive at it.
I won't forget to say that most times we get lost along the way, the motivations, the vibes and the zeal to push forward die. Many failed and forget their goals only to regret later in for not doing or not continuing the pursue their goals when they have the time and energy, they allowed failure or some short term waves push then off track.
This shows that life is full of unforseen circumstances, life can never be smooth and the future remains unpredictable.

We can only navigate through the ups and downs of life and achieve our dreams when we plan ahead of time, when we think long term.

Take for instance (though from my life experience). Two forex traders deposited $1000 each in their trading account, the two of them hope to make profit from trading. One planed the risk/reward ratio in such a way that it will take him two months to turn over the initial capital, the other person plan to make as much profit as possible each trading day.
The later makes $80 to $100 and above on a daily with the $1000 capital, in five days of trading the market he turns over the initial capital... But the funniest part of the case is within one month of trading he blew up the account, losing both the capital and the profits.

The former stick with his initial plans of turning over his trading account in a period of two, so he stick on making $23 everyday, from this he made sure he entered only trade set-up with high probability win rate.
He disciplined himself to make sure he navigate through the the unforseen future.
In this short story I want to point out three things;
Having a defined plans, achievable ones
Mapping out a sizeable time for plans
Staying disciplined in the cause of your plans execution.
I will talk about this in elaborate details along this article.

Going back to the main context of this article, long term plans is one of the surest means of attaining to the success, the happiness we crave for in life.
The popular saying that

Life is not a bed of Roses,

makes it indispensable the position of planning in our lives, not planning alone, rather planning with time and ahead of time too, funny right ?, Yeah some situations may require you to plan ahead of time, what if things never go as you initially planned it, what if you run in or out of luck where would you see your self when your proposed time comes ?.
These are the the question to ask while making future plans.

Planing ahead of time demands you to start on time, prepare, rehearse, get ready, set your alarm (reminders), and get fit for anything the journey, the goal may require of you.
Long term goal is very effective in the sense that it employs serial and step forward sequence, along the line you may see another thing, another goals to achieve that may be the prerequisite for your long term goal, you will find a space to make adjustments in the cause of chasing a long term goal. You might make mistakes, learn and make amends while still focused on a cause. Above all never fail the set out an achieveable goals and a sizable time.

Use the SMART method to set effective goals.
SMART stands for:
Specific: each goal should be specific. For example, rather than “lose weight,” your goal should be “lose 10 pounds.”
Measurable: Establish how you will measure your goals.
Attainable: make sure your goals are realistic and possible to achieve.
Relevant: the goal should be relevant to your long-term vision and compatible with your priorities and values.
Time-bound: Set an ambitious but achievable deadline for the completion of your goal.

Timeliness in planning will make you calm down, see thing that can work out and the ones that couldn't work,
Give you room for experiments.
Set a challenge, have a daily challenge, weekly challenge monthly challenge, and a yearly challenge too.
The achievement of one will give you the good energy to proceed actively to the next.
Failure on any will propel you to do better.
All this will check mate your progress in your goals, build you up an unknown habits or virtue, give you positive energy to continue chasing your dreams and keep you happy as you see continual pregress in your goals.

Get an alarm (a reminder), people always neglect the power of having a reminder when planning a long term goals, when you go off track your reminder will alert you.
It can be someone you trusted, talk to them about your plans, tell them to remind you the thing you told them at intervals, it maybe some inanimate you dedicate your goals to it, like necklace, bracelet etc, that when you look at them, it will remind you of their existence around you.
Join groups of like minds, especially if your goal is to pass exams, mingle among the exams minded fellows, you want to make money, follow up some rich people you cherish their lifestyle, learn from them but don't copy them, your destiny and theirs is not the same, but with them around you, you will always stay motivated to pursue your goal.

Define exactly what you wanted in the cause of your goal, go for them, and forget the crowd, what's more important is your destination not the road you followed.

The end justifies the means

The great and popular word in economics, made it clear.
Don't let the crowd push you out of you plans, don't let the short term returns blindfold you from seeing the big picture.

99% of our lives success and happiness can be achieved by thinking long term when we plan and shape our lives with time, apply some of the above listed way to navigate through unforeseen circumstances in life and remain happy with working towards the actualization of our dreams .
In addition to this, thinking long term will keep you in line with this famous sayings:

Slowly is the fastest way to get to your destination in life.

Also keeping you happy throughout because you're seeing a gradual progress as you match forward.
So in conclusion, the keys to planing long term is :
Define your goal, define your time (sizable enough),
Get your alarm (reminders), to keep you always on track.
Know what you want, go for what you want (there will be a room for adjustments)
Make your goal achievable, and your time sizeable.
Stick to your plans and be very disciplined in the cause your goal.
Be empirically creative along the line,
Don't bother about making mistakes, there will be a room for adjustments, your reminders will alert you, your applied discipline will help get you over it, your sizable time will create room for amendments.

At the end what counts is what you were able to show off.
See how funfiled you will become, the joy and happiness you will drive from doing what you crave for.
