The necessary impact of emotional intelligence.

I am a great advocate for emotional intelligence, there are people who would speak or act anyhow without even thinking about the possible implication their statement would have on others. Emotional intelligence takes more than having an appropriate speech technique, there is more to it than we think, and I would like to talk about emotional intelligence and the impact it has on us.

Emotional intelligence (otherwise known as emotional quotient or EQ) is the ability to understand, use, and manage your own emotions in positive ways to relieve stress, communicate effectively, empathize with others, overcome challenges and defuse conflict. source

With the right ability to know when to speak and when to be quiet which is what emotional intelligence does, it would become so convenient for you to build stronger relationships, and succeed at work, school, and every other related area. Emotional intelligence also helps you make more informed decisions about what matters most to you. The measure of emotional intelligence is divided into four basic attributes;

  • Self-awareness: At this point of emotional intelligence, you have become really aware of your emotions and how these emotions get to affect your behavior and thoughts, at this stage as well, you are aware of your strength, your weakness, and how well your confidence is.

  • Social Awareness: At this stage of emotional intelligence, you get to understand what the needs and concerns of other people are, you also at this stage feel comfortable socially and recognize the power in different behavioral patterns, you get to know that, not everyone is like you and definitely everyone can behave alike.

  • Self-management: This measures your ability to control every form of impulsive feeling and impulsive behavior, when this is in check, your emotions would be more managed in an appropriate/healthy manner, and you will be able to follow through on every commitment made as well as the fact that, you will be able to circumstances they change and as things take form.

  • Relationship management: At this stage, you are able to develop and maintain a very good relationship, and you are able to effectively communicate, inspire as well as influence other people, at this point as well you have been able to work appropriately in a team, manage conflict efficiently as well.

Emotional intelligence is a safe way for you to develop appropriate mental health as your inability to control your emotions could adversely affect your mental health leading to a significant level of vulnerability, anxiety, and depression.
