Start Rewarding Real Curation and Engagement

I post this knowing many want to move Hive tokens to 2nd level. Some even want to remove rewards altogether. Some even want to make the social side of Hive disappear entirely. I am not here to argue the points on any of that. Assuming all things remain as they are, I am proposing the following:

I propose we should only be rewarding true curation and engagement of content. Stop rewarding just votes on the original content. Tie the vote to a comment or other real curation type action before the vote is rewarded (sharing to social, reblogged, adding to a collection, etc.)

Just liking or voting on something is not real curation. Auto-voting and then auto-following a curation trail, whether manual or auto, is not curation. It should not be rewarded. If it is to be rewarded, then let it come out of the content creators pockets if they want to reward someone for blind-voting on their content.

I am sure this will be very unpopular as many make scads of money off rewards this way, so let the roasting begin.

I feel your frustration. I never liked being called a curator in the past as I never really curated until years later like a month ago I finally started commenting on every post my curation trail upvotes on. It is personally enriching, encourages others and illicits general feelings of warm fuzziness all over...

But it is still curating to only cast votes when you get into rewards distribution and the mechanisms of it on a financial transaction based blockchain level. So over lapping a social media layer into it brings in the right brain aspect of curation that seem to carry morale standards often highlighting human individuality as opposed to dry hivemind Vulcan logic ran by numbers.

Anyways, its not that serious but I can understand it is frustrating to hear people brag about curating when they barely comment on the content they upvote on and some would rather just build comment bots using that some Vulcan logic in response. It is beautiful in my opinion.

Anyways hi🤷‍♂️ just randomly ran into your post and appreciate it. Thanks for your honest remarks.

Its not a matter of commenting, but actually curating and being rewarded for it. If they aren't even viewing the content, how can they be actually curating it, thus why should they be rewarded for it.

As an investor I do not want to see this and why I will not invest anymore personal funds into Hive until it ceases.

If you pair an additional action with the auto-votes, people will code bots to do that action as well, and it would become worse, not better.
As long as there is value tied to curation, there will be gamesmanship, but there is no incentive-aligned way to reward authors for creating content without simultaneously awarding curators for discovering content.
We can mix up the reward algorithms all we want (and have many times over the history of hive/steem) but there are no changes that can be made that remove it from the realm of human behavior, greed, and game theory.

There is a big difference between a vote, a comment, and curating something. I can see rewarding for auto-curation. Let them use bots to collect and share content to others, that is what content creators want and need.

However voting on something is NOT curation.

Hive uses content surfacing algorithm to determine which content to display in Trending and Hot. While many people consider the content on the front page to be irrelevant, the same algorithm is used within community pages, with exception that community moderators can pin content they consider more relevant.
The surfacing algorithm is based on time-weighted value of votes received. Upvotes are what determines which page content appears in Trending and Hot pages within communities. Tell me again how an upvote isn't curation?

It's your opinion that upvoting is not 'good' curation, and I'm not in disagreement there. People upvote for lots of different reasons, on lots of different quality levels of content. But when the upvote is at the heart of one of the most important algorithms that is used for content discovery, an upvote is absolutely curation.

When an upvote is done automatically with no consideration to content then it is not curation. Agree to disagree.
