DRAGONS

At Splinterlands the dragons represent power and adaptability. Before the Riftwatcher expansion, bringing to Chaos huge mana monsters, most high mana cards where Dragons. All this comes with a cost, the big draconic cards are expensive. 🤑

The dragon's adaptability is because you're able to use them with other elements and with this make amazing combos. One of them will be shown a little down the text, the Water + Dragon sneak combo. If you wanna learn it, continue reading... 😋

WHELP HERDER

THE CHOICE:

When the Riftwatcher cards came to the market, this cards was one of the cards that took my attention, because it resembled a lot the uraeus, but without the shield it has. With this in mind I search for composition that would be good with Whelp Herder in place of Uraeus and one of them was the Sneak Water Combo.

ABOUT THE CARD:

THE PRICE:

The riftwatchers cards just arrived but already made an impact, mainly for the traders. People who tried to do the fast flip maybe took the loss, like me 😅
Prices are still finding their stability, and because of this I'm still waiting and seeing what the meta will go like to get some cards at my deck. I would advise to rent some of the new cards to test them and see what you would start to keep track of their price charts.
Just to let you guys know, right now Whelp Herder regular foil is $0,176, while the gold one is going for $2,571. 👀

LORE:

The first whelp pens were built on the Sands over a century ago—tall, fenced domes that were sturdy enough to hold a dozen of the creatures. Without exercise, however, the young dragons became unruly and sometimes violent. The Gloridax traders employed Whelp Herders, nomadic dragonborn well-practiced in dealing with young dragons, many of whom had collected their eggs from Dragon’s Roost. A skilled Whelp Herder could ensure the young whelps got the exercise they needed while keeping them safe from predators and preventing escape.

DRAGON SUMMONERS

Sthispa_lv1.png
Sthispa

Phase
This ability makes magic damage able to be missed.
Use it When
You should focus on using this summoner with high speed monsters when the enemy team plans to use magic damage so that they'll be able to evade it.
Combo Cards
Focus on High Speed cards like: Djinn Oshannus, Pelacor Conjurer...

Brighton Bloom_lv1.png
Brighton Bloom

Flying
The Flying ability increases the chance of ally monsters to evate Melee or Ranged Attacks. The evading goes up +25%.
Use it When
The Flying evade is cumulative with Dodge and Blind, and together they can go up to 65%. So it is a good idea to use this summoner with monsters with high speed or with one of this ability. Also, it is a must have in Earthquake ruleset.
Combo Cards
Focus on cards with Dodge and High Speed like: Serpent of Eld or Phantom of the Abyss...

Drake of Arnak_lv1.png

Drake of Arnak

Shield+1
Drake's ability is to increase the shield of your monster in +1.
Use it When
This summoner can be helpful when the enemy team is using a lot of melees in his lineup. It also can be used in Earthquake ruleset, because as it deals melee damage the shield can take one hit of it.
Combo Cards
An amazing card to go with Arnak is also a dragon. It is Djinn Chwala, because with this summoner at the same time it receives protection from the shield the enemy melee that hits it will take thorn damage.

THE LINEUP

Sthispa as Summoner

The weakness of this strategy could be a magic team that would easily kill the kelp and the other monster as they have low health. So this dragon summoner was chosen to deal with this, because with Help's high speed a lot of magic damage will be evaded giving the rest of the team time to deal with the enemy backline.

Kelp Initiate as Tank

Kelp is a 2 mana Water card that can be used as a tank in low mana battles or as a secondary position tank, because it has 5 HP for low cost. It's high speed combine with Sthispa Phase ability, makes it able to evade magic damage and as the rest of team is vulnerable against it, he was a good choice.

Demented Shark as Off-tank

Demented Shark is a core card of the sneak strategy, because it gives the +1 attack to all melee monsters, so they can destroy the enemy backline. Also with it's 6 HP with 1 Shield it can be used as a secondary tank or in low mana battles as main tank.

Whelp Herder as Damage Dealer

The third position was taken by Whelp Herder, because it has higher HP (4) than the other DPS. In this strategy the Whelp will be the Sweeper, the one that finishes the cards with low health with its Opportunity ability. The only downsize is the low speed, but we can live with that.

Dhampir Infiltrator as Damage Dealer

The first of the Sneak monster the Dhampir Infiltrator. With Demented shark's buff his attacks goes to 2, and with the Double Strike ability he can deal up to 4 damage each turn. This amount of damage can pretty much kill any enemy glass cannon. With 2 speed we'll attack after Pelacor Bandit to guaranteed the kill.

Pelacor Bandit as Damage Dealer

The Water's iconic sneak card, Pelacor Bandit. With flying ability, 3 Speed and now Phase from the summoner, he'll be difficult to catch even for mages. He'll be the first to attack the backline with it's 2 damage.

Naga Assassin as Ranged DPS

The last position of this lineup goes to Naga Assassin. It's 5 speed makes very difficult for low speed enemy sneak monster to deal any damage, so that's why she was chosen. Also, its ranged damage will help Demented Shark to kill the enemy tank while the rest of the team deals with the backline.

THE SNEAK BATTLE

You can check the battle: HERE

At the battle the strategy was to use the Demented Shark to buff the attack of the melee monsters, so they could destroy the enemy team focusing on the back-line. The problem with that would be if the enemy decided to use magic damage, because as the monster have low health they would be heavily impacted. So, to deal with this I decided to go with the new summoner from the Riftwatchers mini pack, the Sthispa, because with its Phase ability the ally monster could evade the magic damage. To improve the chance of evading the Kelp Initiate was chosen as tank and the Pelacor Bandit as one of the sneak damage dealers.

At battle the sneak monster focused and destroid the backline as it was proposed, the enemy even tried to place a Gargoya Scrapper to shield the teams backline, but our dps passed through it with ease. The Naga Assassin did her part too, evaded a sneak attack of Stitch Leech and helped to kill the Pelacor Conjurer. So with all in count I this battle went as planned and wouldn't change anything in it.

I really liked how the dragon worked with the Water Element. One thing that i would like to try seeing the enemy strategy is to see if the Sneak Strategy could work with the Life Element. In this strategy i would use the Silvershield Knight in the Demented Sharks place and for the sneak monsters the Feral Spirit and Stitch Leech would be a must have in it.
