Makeup: "Something gone wrong...", Don't throw it away!// Makeup: “Algo salió mal…”, ¡No lo desperdicies!

Buenas tardes~ Espero que hayan tenido una muy buena semana, y que arranquen la que sigue igual o mejor.

Has it ever happened to you that a makeup doesn't turn out the way you wanted it to and you end up removing and throwing everything away with disappointment? It's frustrating, that material, the time, the expense in colors and the idea that you had in your head ends up not being as great as you expected.

¿Les ha pasado que un maquillaje no sale como ustedes querían y terminan quitando y tirando todo con desilusión? Es frustrante, ese material, el tiempo, el gasto en colores y la idea que uno se hizo en la cabeza termina siendo no tan genial como esperábamos.

Many times with the amount of material invested in my work, the ambition to get it right is high, so when something doesn't turn out as expected I tend to be very disappointed.

Muchas veces con la cantidad de material invertido en mis trabajos, la ambición por que me salga bien es alta, así que cuando algo no sale como esperaba tiendo a decepcionarme mucho.

Over time and due to the amount of work I have had to submit, I realized that there is no better way to take advantage of that by reinventing other makeup.

Con el tiempo y debido a la cantidad de trabajos que he tenido que presentar, me di cuenta que no hay mejor manera de sacarle provecho a eso reinventando otro maquillaje.

This was one case. I'm a huge fan of gore, and especially of the manga artist, Junji Ito. One of his works, "Tomie" is one of the most spectacular illustrations out there. And with excitement I had prepared a version of the character....

Este fue un caso. Soy bastante fan del gore, y sobre todo del autor de manga, Junji Ito. Una de sus obras, “Tomie” es de las ilustraciones más espectaculares que existen. Y con ilusión había preparado una versión del personaje…

Unfortunately, it didn't turn out the way I wanted it to, and I ended up feeling very sad because it wasn't what I had imagined. However, I refused to throw away all that detail in the flesh that looked pretty good in color.

Desgraciadamente no salió como quería, me terminó dando mucha pena porque no era lo que había imaginado. Sin embargo, me negué a tirar todo ese detalle en carne viva que se veía bastante bien a color.

I ended up imagining an "American Horror Story"-style character, something grotesque and surreal. An aesthetically accommodating bandage over my eyes and Voila! A perfect mystery character. I use it as an example very often for this kind of cases where the work can be saved.

Terminé imaginando un personaje a lo “American Horror Story”, algo grotesco y surrealista. Un vendaje estéticamente acomodado sobre mis ojos y ¡Voila! Un perfecto personaje misterioso. Lo uso de ejemplo muy seguido para este tipo de casos donde se puede salvar el trabajo.

Another case: A client cancelled at the last minute.

Otro caso: Un cliente canceló a último momento.

On this occasion, I had been asked to do a male zombie design for an event, but the day we settled on was cancelled because he wouldn't attend. Ok...take a deep breath and don't think of it as wasted material.

En esta ocasión, me habían pedido un diseño de zombie masculino para un evento, pero el día que habíamos fijado se canceló porque no iría. Ok…respira profundo y no pienses que es material gastado.

The base design didn't work for me because it was big for my face, so the clay didn't have much of a remedy anymore. Still, I made sure to save a mold.

El diseño de base no me servía porque era grande para mi cara, por lo que la arcilla ya no tenía mucho remedio. Aun así, me aseguré de guardar un molde.

The teeth on the other hand had already been unpacked and I didn't want to pile them up with the rest of the used material because they were still very new. Let's think about something... What's going on these days... We're wearing masks!

Los dientes por otro lado ya habían sido desempaquetados y no quería acumularlos con el resto de material usado porque estaban muy nuevos. Pensemos en algo… ¿Qué ocurre actualmente?¡Usamos máscaras!

Third case...the molds.

Tercer caso…los moldes.

Uhg... The molds break frequently in the studio, either by being hit, dropped or by the same deterioration of their use (by carving, scratching, etc.). One day a mold of my face fell and broke, but it didn't stop me from finishing my work. I needed to create three baroque style laminated masks for a character and I had a time limit.

Uhg…Los moldes se rompen frecuentemente en el taller, ya sea por golpes, caídas o por el mismo desgaste de su uso (al tallarlos, rasparlos, etc.). Un día un molde de mi rostro se cayó y partió, pero no evitó que terminara mi trabajo. Necesitaba crear tres máscaras en lámina estilo barroco para un personaje y tenía tiempo límite.

I put together the split half that survived with a mask base to create face masks and with a lot of balance and patience I managed to finish the latex mask by joining the parts together later.

Junté la mitad partida que sobrevivió con un antifaz de base para crear máscaras y con mucho equilibrio y paciencia logré terminar la máscara de látex uniendo las partes posteriormente.

Objective: My intention with this post is purely encouraging, using examples of my previous work, to give the message that we should always take advantage of our capabilities and imagination. When something doesn't turn out as we expect the best thing we can do with that illusion is to rethink it and do something better.

Objetivo: Mi intención con este post es puramente animador, usando ejemplos de mis trabajos anteriores, dar el mensaje de que aprovechemos siempre nuestras capacidades e imaginación. Cuando algo no sale como esperamos lo mejor que podemos hacer con esa ilusión es darle la vuelta de idea y sacarlo adelante.
