Cinema lens envy

in Filmmakers3 years ago

I’ve been shooting today with this goddam sexy lens 🤤

It’s a 14mm Samyang Xeen cinema lens.

Lovely and wide angled.

It’s part of a set of 5 lenses I’m using which belongs to my pal Tom from Summit Visions - video production.
This is his job I’m shooting on, and I’m second camera op for the day!

His full set of primes are 14, 24, 35, 50 and 85mm.

I’ve never shot with these kind of cinema primes before, and they’re beautiful.
Heavy, well made, all even in size and weight with a super smooth focus ring 😍

The images they shoot are gorgeous. Quite different to the usual L series Canon photography lenses I use day-to-day for my video work.

We were shooting on the GH5S and the Ronin-2 with follow focus.

It’s a great system meaning I can manually focus using my index finger on a controller wheel on the Ronin-2 handle.
Tom is well kitted out for the jobs he does.

My mind is on a massive kit overhaul in the coming 6 months... and I’ve now got my eye on some lenses like these.

BUT things can get expensive very quickly in this ind- but it’s worth it when you can make you’re money back pretty quickly through working with them.

I guess I need to consider kit as an investment more than anything else..

What are the nicest set of lenses you’ve filmed with?

(I reckon @distantsignal has lots of experience in this world of cinema lenses!)

Sort:

I bought a 135mm 2.0f prime for my canon, was second hand, the images totally transformed my photography.

That’s fantastic. It’s a great feeling isn’t it; finding kit or a technique that enhances your work. I’m looking forward to digging deeper in to the world of cine lenses

love the setup! Ive also shot the latest commercial with the XEEN lenses:

Awesome!! Cheers for sharing dude

Your commercial looked and sounded fantastic! Fantastic work man

thanks mate!! glad you like it.

The Xeens are quite nice for an "entry level" cinema lens. They're still super pricey for the average user, but they are definitely an improvement over the original Rokinons. I had the pleasure of shooting with them on my Darkness Calls videos. Nice set up BTW! You might want to take a look at the Sigma Art cine line. They're fast and pretty sharp wide open last I checked. Quite affordable as far as cine lenses go. Those would be the ones I would buy. Sigma's glass is much better than Rokinon's.

HERE'S A B&H REVIEW OF THE SIGMAS:

The nicest lenses I personally paid for and shot with were a three lens set of vintage Kowa anamorphics.

This is excellent advice - happy to do my research on those you mention.
Can’t believe this is the first time I’ve used any lenses like this.
I can see their value immediately.

Cheers for the link, I’ll have a watch now :)

I'm glad I could introduce you to them. I think the Sigma lenses are great, especially for the price. If you have some time, take a look at this Sigma VS Zeiss Otus.

Dude, I love using my cinema lenses. Those sounds like a dream.

Awesome. What lenses do you use? Any entry level style ones you would recommend?

I have a set of the Rokinon cinema lenses. I have the 28, 35, 50, and 85mm. Not high end but for the type of work I do they are great. Plus I have 2 photos lenses I can also use.

Sounds great man

Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS) crops up in many fields. There's always that one item that will help you achieve better results :) At least you are able to try these out properly first.

!PIZZA

I’ve not come across that term before, I like it though!
Sums it up really.

I’m also a fan of the term “all the gear, no idea” - of course this means something different but it highlights the other side of the spectrum

Musicians talk a lot about GAS. It is tempting to keep buying more stuff. I try to resist and concentrate on playing better, but I give in now and again.

I don't know much about these camera except the one I usually see my younger brother with which is Canon.
I would like to see some of the photos you took with camera. Something like flower or street...
