"He's looking at you, Kids!" (c) David Bowie
Hola, setero! As it is Friday today... Friday is for Fungi, so today's blog is dedicated to fungi...
...to one certain fungus to be correct, which I traveled around tonigh, a few hours -- in Photoshop. All images you see are dissections of a single fungus I stumbled upon in Karelia pine forest in September. It was a rare encounter: I think maybe its the 2nd or third time I meet such fungus.
You probably ask me right from the start about its edibility and cooking qualities. Well, skip the blog to the end if you d like to find itout. But I should note -- this fungus is not about eating, it is rather about watching, about amazing invisible horizons that one can discover in his shapes.
And now, the other side of the Moon... i.e. the opposide angle on same fungus --
From this side its tissues have suffered less from the stick that pierced it, and we can see more or less natural shapes of this fungus. Azure-colored lichens also provide very pleasant visual impressions.
Harsh at the foot, but fluffy on its top.
And.... as promised in the beginning of the post: I identified this specie as Hydnellum Caeruleum. And no, it is nor edible neither forageable fungus - but very spectacular and memorable. Thats what we like it for!
Now that was all; hope you enjoyed the visual pleasures of this wild cobalt creature. have a great weekend my dear friends, and I hope you will see fantastic stuff even in the most common and trivia stuff right around the corner of the street!
Just Wow! Is it growing in a tree?
No, it was sitting on the ground; in the growth process it overcame a dried-out bush branch that stood in its way. In the early stages it's tissues are soft, similar to as most fungi have it, it wraps around obstacles it encounters and continue to grow—but in the end tissues become harden. A spectacular specimen—when viewed under magnification, isn't it?
Yes! I thought that the lichen in the background only grew on trees, that's why I asked
That is super cool! I like the ice blue color, and the teeth on the underside look so intricate and delicate. Thanks for sharing!
There is no direct connection here—except of this pale tender and appealing tint of blue—but it reminded me the so called 'Solar coral' I had in my collection as teenager. Said coral accumulate cobalt from a salted sea water—which exactly provides him this color. The shapes are also very similar, pure melted ice-cream. Nature has some patterns that are being reused all of the time.
I am glad you enjoyed the visuals! Thanks for stopping by. Lets share Hive !PIZZA ☘️
Wow that is quite a strange but beautiful fungi. Kind of a blend of hedgehog, lion's mane and a polypore. Kind of looks a bit like frozen ice.
frozen ice, too. melting blue ice. agree - amazing creature!

Oh, you took me right back to that unforgettable scene in Casablanca through this wild cobalt creature. It’s been a pleasure, though I still can’t quite connect it to Bowie. But here I am, singing Heroes.
So nice…
Thank you for stopping by with these beautiful photos, and welcome to this community of dreamers who travel, or travellers who dream.
