In life, people constantly run into all kinds of choices, and it’s not always easy to make a decision right away. I remember once at an exhibition, I saw a product designed specifically to solve the problem of “not knowing what to eat for lunch.” I’ve always thought I didn’t have decision-making issues, but one night my stomach suddenly growled, and I sat in front of my computer thinking, “It’s been a while since I had a late-night snack… should I treat myself?” But then a flood of thoughts rushed in: It’s already so late… Should I cook something or go out? Are there any shops still open? If I eat too much this late, will I get fat? Suddenly, a simple midnight snack turned into a whole debate.
In the end, I decided to just go out and see. It only takes about a minute to walk to the convenience store at the corner. The fried chicken stand is about fifteen minutes away, and the soy milk shop that sells breakfast and late-night snacks is also around fifteen minutes. So I thought, Alright, let’s check the convenience store first. If I don’t find anything I like, then I’ll figure out where else to go.
The shelves at the convenience store were still full of microwave meals—fried rice, pasta, curry rice, donburi, along with rice balls, sandwiches, and even little desserts. There were so many options it felt like I had walked into a mini restaurant. I casually grabbed a donburi because I wanted something warm. Once it came out of the microwave, the smell alone made me want to dig in right away. The meal had meat, vegetables, egg, and rice. I really couldn’t ask for much more.
In this fast-paced era, convenience stores have become more than places to buy drinks or snacks; for many people, they’re basically “late-night diners.” Microwave meals may not be gourmet, but the warmth you get from something hot and ready-to-eat at that moment is something restaurants can’t always offer. A lot of people say microwave food is unhealthy and shouldn’t be eaten too often. My mom always tells me that too. And yes, I know cooking for myself is the healthiest, but honestly… it’s really hard to resist the convenience that a convenience store provides.
