There used to be a YouTuber I watched a lot. His channel was all about living abroad, so he was always traveling around mainland China, documenting everyday life. Sometimes he’d be up in Heilongjiang in the northeast, sometimes in Beijing, and every now and then he’d head down to Guangdong, Shenzhen, or even Hong Kong. And every time he went to the Guangdong area, he always ate Rice Noodle Roll from street stalls. Watching the vendors quickly scoop the rice batter and toss in the fillings with such skill was fascinating—and the best part was, the food looked delicious and super cheap.
Near my home, there are tons of places selling beef noodles, stinky tofu, oyster omelets, and all kinds of Taiwanese snacks. Worst case, you can always go to a night market. There’s plenty to choose from. But shops that specialize in Rice Noodle Roll? Those are really rare. Sure, some Hong Kong-style dim sum restaurants have it, but most people go to those places for dim sum, not for Rice Noodle Roll. As for a shop dedicated solely to Rice Noodle Roll like the ones from that YouTuber’s videos, I don’t think I’ve ever seen one.
One time, when I went to the hospital to visit a relative, I actually spotted a Rice Noodle Roll specialty shop right outside the hospital. I immediately decided to sit down and try it, since I don’t think I’d ever had real Rice Noodle Roll before. And honestly, if I didn’t try it right then, who knows when I’d get another chance? When the plate arrived, it looked really simple—nothing fancy. Just a bit of soy sauce, some vegetables, corn, and fried shallots. Ah… I probably should’ve ordered a meat version. I accidentally picked the vegetarian one. But still, I finally got to try Rice Noodle Roll.
After eating it, I actually wanted more. Next time, I definitely want to order the beef or shrimp version. The only downside was that the shop covered the plate with a plastic bag first and then put the Rice Noodle Roll on top. I get that it saves them the trouble of washing dishes, but it also means we’re the ones taking on the risk of eating plasticizers.
