In today’s world of rapidly advancing technology, I personally feel that traditional calendars have become an outdated product. In the past, people relied on calendars to check the date, follow seasonal changes, and keep track of holidays. But now, electronic calendars and scheduling apps have completely replaced those functions. Although I still often see salespeople giving out wall calendars, yearly calendars, or desk calendars as gifts to their clients during the holidays, most people no longer use them for time management or planning. Instead, calendars have become more of a decorative item.

This made me curious—what kind of creative things can people actually do with calendars? With this question in mind, I walked into an exhibition area and immediately realized that the shop’s main service was customized photo calendars. Some parents like to turn photos of their children into calendars as keepsakes, while some couples choose to make calendars using their travel photos to preserve beautiful memories. In fact, the shop doesn’t just make calendars. It also produces posters, greeting cards, and photobooks. In this age where paper products are becoming less popular, I can imagine how difficult it must be for such a business to survive.

When I was a child, the calendars we used at home were always given to us for free. During the New Year, banks or temples would hand out calendars and yearly planners, and some company representatives would even deliver them directly to customers’ doors. Whenever we received one, we would simply hang it up. But if we didn’t get a new calendar, we wouldn’t bother to buy one or try to get one by ourselves—life went on just the same.

As for whether calendars have any collectible value, I personally think they hardly do. I’ve heard that firefighter-themed calendars featuring muscular men and beautiful women sell very well, and they often get sold out shortly after release. These calendars are eye-catching and generate a lot of buzz. Although the participants usually volunteer to be featured, it still raises issues of objectification and creates a distorted image of firefighters. In short, calendars have long since become indoor decorations rather than practical tools, losing their original purpose altogether.
