I still remember the 1980s and 1990s; it is the golden age of Toys "R" Us. Back then, the physical toy market was booming. Whether it was Barbie dolls, Transformers, LEGO sets, or the latest Nintendo and PlayStation consoles, you could find them all there. Toys "R" Us wasn’t just a retailer; it was a dreamland for kids.
When I was traveling in the U.S., I once passed by a three-story Toys "R" Us store. Inside, there were endless rows of toys — so many that any child walking in would have their eyes light up. Even I couldn’t resist; I started picking things up here and there, spotting toys my parents never bought me when I was little. The sheer visual impact, combined with the cheerful music playing in the store, made it clear why Toys "R" Us was once the undisputed king of retail.
But good times never last forever. I can’t remember which year it was, but I saw the shocking news that Toys "R" Us had declared bankruptcy. I couldn’t believe such a huge brand could go under. Its fall also marked the rise of online shopping. Not long ago, I was wandering through a department store and, to my surprise, saw the Toys "R" Us logo again. Had it come back from the dead?
When I walked up to the ninth floor, there it was; it is a Toys "R" Us section. But it was much smaller than before, and the variety wasn’t as vast. They mainly sold merchandise from One Piece, Chiikawa, and Pokémon, along with some lifestyle items and blind boxes. Honestly, it felt more like a pop-up store than the massive toy paradise I remembered. The only real difference was that Toys "R" Us seemed to carry more licensed IP brands. I think it’s repositioning itself as a trendy toy store.
It seems Toys "R" Us is trying to reinvent itself. I felt a bit sad, but also relieved. I miss the days when people could walk in, touch, and try out all kinds of new toys in a huge store. Still, seeing Toys "R" Us come back in a new form — transforming into what I now think of as a stylish, modern toy shop — gives me hope. No wonder people say, “The only thing constant in this world is change”.
