When you go out for noodles, some places will ask whether you want thin noodles or thick noodles. I personally prefer thick noodles, because they don’t just hold the sauce better—some handmade thick noodles also have that amazing chewy bite. The moment you take a bite, that little bounce-back feeling makes you want to keep eating. Honestly, as long as the noodles are chewy enough, the dish is basically guaranteed to taste good.
The shop I went to is called “Tan Ya Noodles”, a well-known handmade noodle place in the area. It’s also one of those famous places where people always line up. Their noodles are said to be super chewy, and lots of locals have been eating there since they were kids. Since I knew it was a popular spot, and I didn’t want to spend forever waiting in line, I tried my luck by going during an off-peak time. I actually only arrived a little earlier than the usual mealtime, but I happened to avoid the crowd. Not long after, I got a seat inside—pretty lucky.
I ordered their highly recommended Moo Shu Fried Noodles. About 80% of people recommend it, and I even secretly peeked at what other tables were eating—almost every table had it. After waiting a bit, the dish arrived. The serving time wasn’t fast but not slow either. I originally thought the small portion wouldn’t be enough for me, but I was completely wrong. When the plate first arrived, I thought the portion size was just okay, but after eating half of it, I already felt pretty full. By the time I finished the whole plate, I had reached 100% fullness. No wonder people online keep saying that at this place, just order the small size—if you order the large one, you probably won’t be able to finish it.
Their Mouthwatering Chicken Noodles and Half-Tendon Half-Meat Beef Noodles are also signature dishes. With their chewy handmade noodles, pretty much every noodle dish hits a certain standard. Personally, I think the portion size is definitely one of their selling points. Later, I noticed lots of tables had small bowls so they could share the noodles among their group. That way, they could try more dishes and still eat till they’re full. As a first-timer, I didn’t know this trick. Next time, I’ll definitely share with whoever I go with.
