The bark of plants are hard and resistant to external attacks. Do you know that they were not naturally shard initially ?they became hard and tough due to the level of exposure they had. It instead of contact with the difficult and fierce external environment to kill them, it ended up making them evolve to survive or adapt.
Hard times don't kill, they build us.. I love your story. It's not everyone that can go through what you went through and survive.
