So there has been a hot debate in our telegram channel about how or not, the hivenaija community supports Nigerians on hive and I just want to use this opportunity to share with the community some of the major reasons why hivenaija exist and debunk certain myths.
HiveNaija is a Support Group for Nigerians.
Primarily, hivenaija exists to support Nigerians on the hive blockchain, especially newbies, with relevant information about hive and how to navigate the hive ecosystem. What this solves is the problem of retention where many people come on here and do not find space or people to genuinely connect with. This has been a major problem on hive and the hivenaija solves this problem. So here we are an info-centric group.
We also offer an opportunity for Nigerians to interact with each other, build relationships and have a pleasant social experience on hive. This for me is a major challenge on hive as most people are primarily concerned about earning and that trumps everything, which reflects poorly in the content they create (which are subpar) and engagement.
We understand that earning is an integral part of the hive blockchain and we advise everyone, as we would say in our local parlance, to secure the bags. However, if you are genuinely interested in connecting with people in your sphere (Nigerians--both locally and in the diaspora) the hive Nigeria community is for you.
I also want to add that there are curation initiatives to support African/Nigerian creators. For instance, I know of a curation initiative by curie tailored for African content (you might have seen their upvote on your post a couple of times). There are also individual efforts on the tribe level (proofofbrain and vyb) to curate hivenaija content. So we do support creators from Nigeria (maybe not on the scale they are expecting).
If all of the points I listed above are not what you are seeking then I would kindly suggest you pitch your tent elsewhere and I wish you the best of luck. There are so many communities where you can post and earn huge upvotes and I will suggest you explore them as well. We currently cannot give upvotes of that range.
However, here at hivenaija we believe in building. We believe this is the foundational block for process, growth and prosperity, and we are extending our hands to everyone who believes in this vision and is willing to work with us to actualize them.
Also, the hivenaija community is looking forward to extending its reach outside the hive ecosystem. I strongly believe we can use this opportunity here through our interaction with the world to bring positive changes to our physical communities as well. Most of our goals are adventurous but we believe they are achievable with the right support from the right people.
I also want to say that all of the moderators are volunteers. No one is currently earning from the work they do on hivenaija and we hope to keep it this way so the system is not perverted by greed or selfish gains.
Also, in the future, we look towards pulling our resources together to leverage certain opportunities on the hive blockchain (case study: brofinance, leobacked investments). I think this will bring about the desired financial growth many clamours for in the community.
We also need more skilled people on our team (writers, graphic designers, etc). For instance, we have the hivenaija newsletter initiative which is still taking shape. The goal is to create a newsletter that can capture the interest of Nigerians across various social platforms. These are some of the areas we hope to venture into as a community.
What can you do for the community?
We would like to improve the social experience on hive, so we urge every member of the hivenaija to post on the hivenaija page. I have heard cases of people only using the hivenaija tag. Most of the curators curate from the hivenaija page.
We also ask that you put your best foot forward. As earlier said, hivenaija is not primarily a curation community but we support those who create engaging content (we prioritize content with significant engagement).
Also, aside from blogging, we are focused on branching out (like I said earlier). So currently have two live sessions a week, one on Twitter space (Wednesday) and the other on telegram (Sunday). We hope to grow our community to a thousand active users, which should make us one of the most active communities on hive. This I believe will create more opportunities for the community and its members in terms of support and collaborations.
So in a nutshell, we hope to build within and outside the hive ecosystem. We hope to have a sustainable community that can cater to its members in the long run. It's only going to take dedication from a few people (not everyone). I do not believe so much in large numbers. I believe there are Nigerians here who want to do more than just earn and hivenaija is willing to work with them to actualize our goals and theirs as well.
Looking forward to meeting the hivenaija community (Ibadan). For more information about the meetup please contact me on telegram, thank you.
