STEMng Digest: Hope for the best, but expect the worst

in Speak Peacelast year
Authored by @gentleshaid

The election season in Nigeria is drawing nearer and nearer. While I don't actively participate in elections, the state of the country makes it such that one cannot avoid political discussions. Each time I get involved, I love to be as objective as possible.

For the records, I have no preferred candidates at any level of governance as far as the forthcoming elections are concerned. This stand has fetched me curses, insults, and staunch enemies on social media. You and I know the supporter base that can curse and insult the most on social media.

I will say it again, there is no saviour anywhere as far as Nigeria is concerned. My prayer would be with whosoever emerges at every level. I have raised my hopes high in the past and all I have gotten are disappointments. My advice to everyone would be to hope for the best and expect the worst. You can have your preferred candidate, but don't expect too much from him or her.

Welcome to a new edition of STEMng digest. The second of the year 2023.

Who are we?

STEMng is the Nigerian sub-community of the stemsocial community, a community that has been supporting stem authors on the hive blockchain for about four years now. While stemsocial focuses on everyone irrespective of their country, STEMng is specifically for Nigerians. The best stem contents published by Nigerians on the Hive blockchain are highlighted weekly.

Below are the posts that made it into our digest for this week:

  1. @ireti: [Digestion] - Mastication and Mastication process
Our first post for this week is from a new entrant and talks about food digestion. I know many of us who did high school biology are familiar with the processes that lead to food digestion, but not in fine details. This post specifically discusses what happened to the food when chewed, a process otherwise known as mastication. A really good read.

2.@medicvibes: Substance Abuse in Nigeria(Abstract)
Here is a post from one of our medical doctors discussing substance abuse as it relates to Nigeria. This social ill is very common in out society to the extent that I don't think anyone exist in Nigeria that doesn't know someone who is into substance abuse. The various correlating factors were not just discussed but the author also proffered possible solutions.

3.@nattybongo: Why Cataract Surgery?
Cataracts affect the lens of the eye and progressively limit visions and are best removed via surgery. However, the mention of surgery often scare many folks in developing countries away, perhaps due to lack of education, the cost involved, or even a combination of the two. In his post, our Ghanaian Optometrist educated us on why people don't need to run away when the surgical removal of cataracts is mentioned.

4.@sam9999: About Gingko Biloba: How It Can Help People With Alzheimer’s Disease
Alzheimer's disease is a disease characterized by loss of memories and has been known to be the main cause of dementia. In this particular post, the author discusses a natural remedy with the potential to ameliorate the symptoms of the disease. Gingko plant has been researched to have several medicinal benefits, the potential to improve blood circulation to the brain has also made it a good option for naturally ameliorating the symptoms of Alzheimer. Read the post to learn more.

5.@sperosamuel15: The Smiling Plasmodium || Blood capsule, Vitamin C and ACT

Rounding off our selections for this week is a post from another new entrant into the STEMng digest. Nigeria being a malaria-endemic country, many people are used to getting OTC malaria drugs in addition to blood tonic and vitamin C. The author educates us all why taking blood tonic and vitamin C along with malaria drug is counterproductive and makes the causative organism 'smile' instead.

And that ends our selections for this week. Do not forget to give the featured posts/authors your maximum support. Thank you in advance.
