🎵 Hive Open Mic 66 - Daughter of the Sea (WoW: Battle for Azeroth promotional song cover)

in Hive Open Mic3 years ago

Back in 2018 the new expansion of World of Warcraft was announced with this video. There were others telling the stories of characters that had been out of the picture for a long time.

In this case, it is a little piece of narrative were Jaina is shown as relevant to the story after a lot of time. Last time we saw her, she was trying to help the orcs and the Prophet to stop Archimonde in Kalimdor. Of course, this act of siding with the orc -humanity's foes for so long- got her labeled as a traitor.

This beautiful song is a story of coming to terms with this fact and coming back into the mainstream WoW story as the Horde's leader Sylvannas is going power crazy.

This amazing work was composed by Neal Acree & Logan Laflotte, vocals by Laura Bailey & Dónal Kearney.

As this week's topic is about "The Sea", a lot of songs came to mind. There's plenty of sea-related lyrics and musical sub-genres related to the sea in traditional Venezuelan music. However, this one kept playing in background thoughts. It was lovely to revisit it.

I have to say it was a challenge as the melody has this lot of chords I can't play complete in the mandolin, but the adaptation proved to worked. I spent some hours looking to the best instrument to use in the harmony. First, it was acoustic guitar, but the sound was too crunchy. I went with this double-guitar. I don't think I have seen something like this, but it sounds like this big instrument used by Mariachi in México and around Latinamerica, it is called "Guitarrón". It's basically a really big guitar.

With that in mind, I prepared the recording and these are the results. I've never felt blue about the fact that I'm not a good singer; otherwise, I might have attempted a choral version of this using other instruments. Something similar to the original. But I cannot say I don't like the results. This arrangement is an adaptation of Ron Blänkner's piano arrangement. I hope you find it interesting.

The lyrics of the song go this way:

Beware, beware the daughter of the sea
Beware, I heard him cry
His words carried upon the ocean breeze
As he sank beneath the tide

Those blood-soaked shores of Kalimdor
Where sailors fought and died
The admiral fell at Theramore
Because she left his side

Why this? Why this, oh daughter of the sea?
Why this? Did you forget your seaside days?
Always the pride of our nation’s eyes
How could she go astray?

When she did flee across the ocean deep
The admiral followed west
What else but sail to save a daughter’s life
And pray she still drew breath?

But there he found upon those distant shores
Enemies ’pon the rise!
But when he faced those savage foes
His daughter stood aside

And buried deep beneath the waves
Betrayed by family
To his nation, with his last breath, cried
Beware the daughter of the sea!

I’m listening now, father

I heard, I heard, across a moonlit sea
The old voice warning me
Beware, beware the daughter of the sea
Beware, beware
Of me

Disclaimer: When I got the lyrics, it said the song was written by Doug Gregory and Robert Brooks. So I think they did the original song and the awesome one above is a work from other people. That's all.

Hey @bertrayo

I think you really extended the use of this traditional Venezolan instrument. The luthiers who made the first Venezolan cuatros ever, would not imagine that one day, a young man will play music from a game Warcraft! You are very innovative!

I heard, I heard, across a moonlit sea
The old voice warning me
Beware, beware the daughter of the sea
Beware, beware
Of me

This strophe is cool! 👌

Well, thanks a lot. The whole song is a piece of art. That includes the video 😄

I loved the original song and loved your cover with the mandolin! It gave it another special sound, very different but still capturing the essence from the original, loved it 👏🎶

Thanks a lot for taking the time to listen and comment. I tried my best to keep the same mood 😄
