This week's topic on #openmic is an opportunity to look back at things and ponder. For me, contemplation means a lot of what I do daily in order to better myself. It's a hard process. And sometimes we are not even aware of the things we a re doing.
It reminds me of this story. I made my first cuatro because I didn't have a cuatro for playing solos. That's the reason behind my whole drop into the luthierie's rabbit hole. It's a silly story. However, it's been a self-discovery journey (something very cheesy to admit). Not only have a learned a bit about this playstyle, but I have learn about my weaknesses as a musician and how to work on them. Needless to say the activity of making instrument is the perfect combination of stuff I love: music and building things from scratch. It's a win-win!
Today, I bring you the very first thing I studied after Embla was ready. Back then, I published a short video playing a part of Apure en un Viaje by Jenaro Prieto on my Instagram account: @poetadac. I got some nice comments and well, that's how it all began. There's an interesting trivia fact about this composer that is worth mentioning. His name is written like that Jenaro with "j" contrary to the more popular and widely known Genaro with "g". Actually, you can find his name with the wrong spelling in a lot of places in the internet and music books. One of the things that makes this composer sad is the fact that his fame is attached to the wrong spelling of his name. Nonetheless, even if his name isn't spelled correctly everywhere, this composition is one of those pieces required in any traditional music player from Venezuela.
This version comes again by the brilliant mind of Alís Cruces, but I added some tweaks here and there to make it more mine. After watching the recording, I'm happy to pat myself on the shoulder. It's been a long time since I studied this. And now, I'm better than before. A nice thing to see in such harsh times. I hope these words and the performance helps you in your contemplation. And more than all, that you enjoy it.

Esta semana el tema del #openmic es una oportunidad para reflexionar sobre el pasado. Para mí, la palabra contemplación implica mucho de los que hago a diario. Es un proceso complejo. Y muchas veces no estamos muy seguros de lo que hacemos.
Me recuerda a esta anécdota. Construí mi primer cuatro porque no tenía uno para tocar solos. Esa es toda la razón detrás de este viaje al país de las maravillas llamado luthería. Es una historia un poco tonta. Sin embargo, implica un viaje de autodescubrimiento (algo muy meloso para admitir). No solo he aprendido un poco sobre este estilo, pero sobre las debilidades que tengo como músico y cómo trabajar en ellas. No es necesario decir que hacer instrumentos es la combinación perfecta de dos cosas que adoro: la música y armar cosas.
Hoy, les traigo la primera pieza solista que me aprendí después de construir a Embla. En aquel entonces, publiqué un video corto tocando la parte B de Apure en un Viaje de Jenaro Prieto en mi cuenta de Instagram: @poetadac. Recibí algunos comentarios muy buenos y ahí empezó todo. Hay una trivia interesante sobre este compositor que es necesario colocar por acá. Su nombre se escribe así, Jenaro, con "j". Creo que todos estamos familiarizados con el Genaro con "g". De hecho, su nombre está mal escrito en muchos libros y otros textos que hablan sobre la música venezolana. Una de las cosas que entristece a este compositor es el hecho de que su fama está ligada a esta manera incorrecta de escribir su nombre. No obstante, aunque su nombre podría estar mal escrito en todos lados, esta composición se ha convertido en una pieza fundamental en el repertorio popular y académico de cualquier músico venezolano.
Esta versión viene de la mente brillante de Alís Cruces, pero le añadí algunas cosas para hacerla un poco más mía. Después de ver la grabación, estoy muy feliz. Me podría dar una palmada en el hombro. Ha pasado tanto tiempo desde que estudié esto. Y ahora, está mejor que nunca. Algo bueno de ver en tiempos tan difíciles. Espero que esta presentación los ayude con su contemplación. Y más allá de eso, que la disfruten.

Oh, how interesting was this song! I will say once again, it seems difficult rhythm for me and I heard some nice chord progression that makes the sound more exotic. 💫
Well, thank you. I really doubt this would be a difficult rhythm for you. It's not 5/8. This is a 3/4 piece. I'm not going exact on time because it's the freedom of the solo playing, but besides that it wouldn't give you more problems.

Más allá de la interpretación que está bastante buena merece ser rescatada toda tu historia en el camino de la luthería tal como la cuentas para tenerla como un ejemplo a seguir para quienes quieren seguir luchando por sus sueños, y sobre todo por nuestra música venezolana.
