It's an audio interface device that processes sound from a microphone and converts it to high quality digital audio, which it feeds a computer usually via a USB connection.

So it's general AIM is to provide great sound via USB for recording/editing on your computer.

They come in various types and sizes, with various capabilities, the major differences being the level of quality of sound and the amount of inputs they can take.

Summarily, all it does is to supply quality audio to your computer and your headset.

You can now decide what app you want to use on your computer to record/edit the audio.

You can actually get good audio without a computer too.
All you need is a good microphone! And there are a few affordable mics that can do the job.
Some phones do actually have great mics inbuilt too.

Long before now, I'll record straight into a phone and get some useful audio.
It's about how well one can use what you have on your hands.
