Seems you and @steve-o2023 had the same idea, but you each do it in your own style. It is a haunting song and it is amazing to think that it has been sung for hundreds of years. For every song that survives I expect hundreds have been lost.

Who was the fella that went round recording folk songs?..I know Vaughan Williams did that but there was another bloke too...used to know his name but thd old grey matter has gone wrong...
Google tells me Cecil Sharp did a lot. Alan Lomax did it later in the US.

That's it Cecil Sharp.. he went round with an old tape recorder to pubs and transcribed a load of folk songs.
it might have been wax cylinders rather than a tape recorder..not too sure..😂
