Some of you who follow me know my dog Bailey is my "person". When they say dog is man's best friend, I take it literally. She is my bestie! So it makes me very sad when she doesn't feel good.
Recently we discovered a softball size lump in the inside of her right rear thigh. It is like it appeared overnight. Surely it did not, but by the time we noticed it, it had grown to this size.
We got her into the veternarian yesterday and the news is not uplifting. They had to take a biopsy from it and send it off to a lab. We may not know the results for at least a week.
Until then, I am on pins and needles. If it is cancerous, which seems to be the suspicion, they said the leg will have to be removed as they said the margins will not be clean enough to get all of it.
This is better than losing her, but I feel sad because she will lose some of her ability to run and play like she used to. However, animals are very adabltable and I have seen many dogs missing a leg that do quite well and seem very happy after they recover.
With all that said, she seems to be oblivious to all this. The lump doesn't seem to bother her, it doesn't seem to cause any pain currently. Suprisngly, even for its size, it is not impacting her ability to walk or run.
So for the next week, until we get the test results, I will be a worried dog dad that is expecting the worst.
On another note, there was also a need to take one of our cats, Sassy, to the vet because her eyes had been watering and she was sneezing a lot. Seems she aquired an upper respiratory infection. They gave us some meds we are to give her until she stops sneezing.
$500USD later and I am wondering if we should take out insurance on our pets. Yeah, they have that sort of thing. With the zoo we have, it may be worth checking out. Three dogs, three cats and a tank of fish can get expensive to take care of.
BUt they are worth every cent.

Joe

Greetings @coinjoe ,
So sorry to hear Bailey and Sassie are requiring medical attention.
Here's hoping it will get sorted in no time.
Thinking of you and your good lady and all the pets,
Bleujay
Thank you for the well wishes.
Hope for the best for your dog.
Yeah, pets are absolutely worth every penny!
Thanks. Yep they sure are
Sorry to hear that brother! Tumors like that can be nasty, hopefully it's a benign one. Dogs are wonderful animals and great friends, I hear you there. Glad the cat's issue is a little simpler. Pet insurance is great to have, but as pets age the premiums really can skyrocket. Some don't cover certain things (like tumors) so read the fine print if you head that direction.
I hope Bailey does OK, and I have seen many dogs with three legs that to great. So worst case scenario she'll still be happy and comfortable!
Appreciate the tip about the pet insurance.
Hope you’re doing well friend.
Ugh, that sucks. I hope it comes out okay even though it sounds like they already know how it is going to go. My thoughts are with you during this tough time.
Thanks. Yeah I’m expecting she is going to have some hard days ahead .
:(
I feel sad for your dog. I hope it's not cancerous😑
You and me both. Thanks for reading and commenting
Hope it is good news with Bailey, pups are so much more than a best friend, so I feel you. Poor Sassy too and I hope she has stopped sneezing now.
Pet insurance is something we always used to take. Now costs over here have gone through the roof for vets.
Thanks for the well wishes for the fur babes. I still need to research more but it’s not looking good because from what I’m seeing @thebighigg was right. Most won’t cover cancer stuff.
I know over here, they don't cover pre-existing conditions.
Thank you
So sorry to hear about Bailey, hope it's just benign! Time to get pet insurance, especially as they're also getting older, will start having more and more health issues (just like us humans😉)
Thank you. Yes I think we will be looking into it
Oh, poor love. It sucks to see them suffering even if they seem to be doing okay.
When my son got his puppy the silly thing got UTI after UTI - $250 for puppies, $3000 for the vet bills.
Sigh.
Yes, regretfully they can get very expensive sometimes.
