The dirty digger.

Wife and I decided to go ahead and tackle the backyard holes while the weather was cool. It started with me waking from a short nap. Realized the wifey wasn't in the house. Looked out back and there she was. Dumping dirt in holes.

So I put on my shoes and went out back to join in.

The pictures just don't do all the damage justice. There was more outside the frame of the shots. A backhoe has nothing on Lilly.

It was a real nice day for lugging around bags of fill dirt and seed. We got the holes filled and seeded. Felt good to knock it out.

Then came the hard part. Keeping her from digging again in the fresh filled holes.

We made a trip to Lowe's lawn and garden section. Bought some sections of that temporary plastic garden fence and some stakes. Put that in for a temporary barrier for now.

Will it hold? We'll see. She's determined.

Lilly is just over a year old. We hope she grows out of this soon. Some dogs do. Some don't. My father in law thinks it's because we used to have a mole digging in the yard last year. That I'm not so sure of. Pretty sure she just likes to dig. Some dogs chase balls. Some dogs bark at everything. Ours excavates.

She's lucky she's cute.

The holes are filled. The fence is up. The seed is down. Now we wait and see if grass grows faster than Lilly's desire to destroy it.

I'm not optimistic. But we did what we could.

Sounds like she's a dog on a mission. That lawn is going to have a hard time vs Lily!

Not sure what her mission is. She is determined to complete it though. So far the fence is working. Seems she is only digging in that one part of the yard.

She’s full of energy and still quite young... she needs toys!!! If she doesn’t want the ball, find something else. You’ll see – she won’t dig any more holes

I think it is boredom as well. But she has plenty of toys. Balls, chew bones, squekers, etc. She just gets bored with them easily. Ah, we will figure it out eventually. That or she will grow out of it.

If she wants a walk, take her out on the lead... walk with her, and you’ll build a bond too. She needs to get out, and it’ll do you good as well!🤗

I was thinking that dogs dig out of boredom but as long as she's taken out for regular walks, interaction times and she has a few favorite toys there'd be less of that digging habit. It's been a long time since I had a pooch in the house.

I think she is bored as well. We give her all kinds of toys, but she bores with them easy. I have got to train her to walk right. Last time I tried to walk her, her little butt darn near pulled me down.

We were lucky that Jovi never really did much digging. Her pee definitely did a number on parts of our lawn. I think I read somewhere that gypsum is good for combating the acidic urine spots.

The urine spots I gave up on long ago. Our backyard is the most neglected. Mostly due to the dogs.

Our culprit is in the first picture:)
If she senses a mole, there will be a fight. And if she likes to dig, maybe you should set aside a few squares for her. I had a Puli, a domestic sheepdog breed, which generally does not dig. But this one of mine dug all the way to China in search of a mole. Even the part of the yard that was intended for him was not enough. As soon as he appeared in the front yard, he would start digging. And in that part where he stayed, he didn't dig.

So far what we did seems to be working. She is not digging right now.

Greetings friend, it's great that you worked as a team on the planting and the yard looks much nicer.

Thank you.

Buena historia. La cerca tal vez no aguante. Lilly es linda, pero cava mucho. Suerte.

Nice story. The fence might not hold. Lilly is cute, but digs a lot. Good luck.

It is possible the fence might not hold. We will just have to patch it when it gives.

Oh I guess you have to catch her doing it and distract her with something positive and rewarding? Preemptive discipline of sorts?

Maybe. She won't do it when we are looking. I think it is a boredom thing.

She's lucky she's cute.

I say this about a lot of dogs, and children, and women.

I had digging dogs in the past and found that they do sort of grow out of it if I made them aware that they were not supposed to be doing that. I got lucky with Nadi, she was never a digger, a chewer, a barker or anything that people consider undesirable. She doesn't actually do anything I don't like and I did very little to make this happen. I got lucky!
