Fiona!!! Happy belated birthday. I'm glad that even though it was your first birthday without Tom, the people close to you managed to make it a fun day.
It's a relief that your tree is still standing and you only had to get rid of a couple of branches.
And about people and the comments or lack thereof. I don't think it will ever cease to amaze me how tactless some people can be.
