Some years ago, we had a hanging flower basket in our back deck that included a number of brightly colored tiny pansies.
Nothing terribly unusual about this... lots of wholesale nurseries put these little flowers in their hanging baskets. They are colorful and easy to grow.
So the spring following that particular basket, we suddenly had tiny pansies growing in the lawn.
These were actually smaller than the originals and evidently had self-seeded from the basket of flowers... reverting from their hybrid state towards their natural state.
Mrs. Denmarkguy felt bad that they would get whacked by the lawn mower, so she decided to dig them up and transplant them to our vegetable garden.
And so they became the ongoing project of the "Rescue Pansies."
And, in some strange way, they became the "national flowers" of our homestead.
But that's not where the story ends...
The Rescue Pansies were quite happy with their new spot in the garden, and subsequently decided to throw their seeds everywhere.
Now, one more generation removed from their hybrid state. So now they look even more like the tiny wildflowers they once were.
And they seem to be taking over the world!
They are in the herb bed, mixed in with the leeks, going to town with the arugula and beyond!
And what's really weird is that all these varieties of colors were not in the original pot!
Those were all yellow...
It'll be interesting to see where this all ends up!

Those are so cute! Yes, they all need to be rescued! My university colors were purple and gold/yellow, so I've always loved pansies!!
We were just super surprised when they started seeding in the lawn where the hanging basket had been... so they got rescued!
It’s funny how the viola family does that! I had the same sort of thing happen a couple decades back. But I love how yours have hung on, with such care.
