Late Night Reflection: When the Stories We Tell Get a Little Out of Hand!

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

This afternoon, I felt inspired to tell a the story of my very first experiences and impressions when I initially arrived in the United States back in 1981, as a freshly baked college student from Europe.

As stories go, I reckon it could be pretty interesting to many people, beyond which I would like to put it here just as a potential point of reference for the grandkids to read one of these years... if they care.

Of course, they say that ”the road to hell is paved with good intentions...”

And I really didn't get very far into the story before I realized it would be far too long for a blog post.

One of the things I've learned in my 5-odd years of being part of this community is that it is a bit of a challenge to get people to read much beyond 1000 words. Can't say it's how I blame anyone, most of us have busy lives and we don't really have time to sit around and read long stories all day.

On the other hand, I know more than a few creative spirits here we have published their entire books on Hive.

Anyway, as I closed in on the 2000 word mark, I realized that I probably needed to serialize this thing. That is, write it out in full first, and then break it into more digestably sized bits.

No, ”digestably” is not a word.

I just made it up, but I'm gonna use it anyway because it sort of conveys what I'm trying to say.

Anyway, the experience of this little writing incident reminded me that I've never been ”afraid” of writing. One of my clear memories from aforesaid University days is how much my fellow students would cringe and try to run away from any course that included the statement ”contains a substantial writing component.”

While most people ran away from those courses. I personally ran towards them. On the other hand, I was the one who ran away from any courses that required us to give presentations in front of the class! I guess we each have our way of working with things.

Regardless, I have always sucked at telling stories, but writing stories seemed to fit my temperament perfectly. I think writing more accurately reflects the "velocity" of my thoughts... deliberate, measured, often slow.

But no human being is ever consistent!

I far prefer written blogs over "vlogs," because I find vlogs to be painfully slow to get through... I could read that content in 1/10th of the time!

But I am digressing. I will continue to work on the *"fresh young college student" story for a few weeks before it will appear here. Because telling some stories can just get a little out-of-hand!

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!

I love writing stories, especially fictional. It always ends up being more detailed and longer than expected. So yeah, as you mentioned, just break it up into sections. Looking forward to seeing what comes up 👍

My blog problem is often too many photos! LOL I did write long blogs about topics when I first got here. I've no idea of word count but some were very long!

Blogs over vlogs, I am totally with you on that point.
I write elsewhere and have found out that once you start going over the 600 word mark that is when the engagement starts to wane.
