Not the "Right" Kind of Creativity...

in Silver Bloggers7 hours ago

I actually did quite a lot of writing, this morning. Which — on the whole — is a good thing.

That said, I didn't exactly come up with a bunch of wonderfully creative blog posts.

I was once told that you can trigger (writing) creativity by sitting down and just start writing, even if what you're writing is complete and utter nonsense. I ended up writing an awful lot of nonsense!

I suppose that I should be glad that I did write a couple of decent articles for a different venue... where I'm an occasional guest contributor. But that doesn't exactly help my Hive endeavors.

Managing my scattered brain is always a challenge. Always has been. Even while doing what was seemingly one task — writing — I actually ended up going in several different directions. Not great...

One of the things I learned a long time ago is that if I am to get anything accomplished, I need to "chunk small." Undoubtedly, this makes zero sense to the neurotypical brain... you just decide what you want to do, and then do it, right? Not so much...

Chunking small means breaking large tasks into many small tasks so that (A) I can celebrate a "completion" fairly easily and (B) I won't get distracted and bored and "wander off" as a result of working on what feels like an interminable process. In other words, the task is over before I reach boredom.

A few days ago, I was listening to a podcast in which the person being interviewed was explaining how she perceived time. Five minutes was a meaningless amount of time, but of it was expressed as "300 seconds" she knew exactly how long she had left.

I found myself really being able to relate to that...

Yes, there's a lot of "psychological trickery" involved in trying to stay focused and productive, when staying focused and productive is extremely difficult!

Aren't there drugs for this kind of thing?

Yes, there are. But it's typically a tradeoff. You get the ability to focus, but you give up reliable sleep, accept body aches and few other side effects. Most people I know with ADHD prefer to manage their situation, rather than letting themselves get drugged into oblivion.

I am one of those.

But the real point here is that creativity moves independently of one's ability to focus... and even the most focused and structured people sometimes find themselves in situations where they just can't come up with the "right" kind of creativity.

ADHD makes a little more challenging, to be sure... but it's not necessarily a determinant.

You might wonder who I expend so much energy on the whole "creativity vs. ADHD" issue these days... it's something I cycle through, every few years, trying to keep myself informed of the latest tips and tricks.

It matters — at least to me — because I derive a substantial portion of my living from things creative, and the better I understand the underlying mechanics, the better my chances of making it through my days without excessive periods spent gazing absentmindedly out the window.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great weekend!
