Publishing Dilemmas and External Readership

Whether it concerns Hive or elsewhere, when you're a content creator, there's always the dilemma of "what to write" to worry about.

Because I tend to be a very scattered person who has far too many interests, simply answering "whatever I'm interested in, in this moment" would lead to an utterly chaotic jumble of stuff.

It might be difficult for the regular visitor to these pages to believe, but I do restrain myself considerably!

These days, a lot of people are discussing — and working on — the long-standing issue of attracting new users to our Hive community, and that of course also means considering what sort of content might be interesting to a potential prospect.

Pre-Hive, most of my writing was in the psychology and self-help area... something that is not all that popular on Hive... or so it would seem. It actually surprises me that we don't have a "Psychology" community here.

I say that because Psychology and Self-Help is is a top-10 web topic, in terms of content created and consumed.

Of course, writing more on topics in psychology — and particularly as it intersects with sensitivity, the Autism Spectrum and ADHD — is also my choice because it is subject material I actually have an existing external audience to put the articles in front of.

Alas, they haven't really heard very much from me since I set up base camp on Hive... but it might be worthwhile to start reaching out again.

Thankfully, PeakD now makes it possible to see actual readership counts on our posts... so I would be able to tell whether posting a Hive article to various Facebook groups actually brings in external readership.

Which brings me to my eternal hesitation of turning articles into sales pitches. It's always a bit sketchy when someone takes on a seemingly serious topic, and half-way in you suddenly discover that you're actually reading a sales pitch.

Frankly, I have always been best at UN-selling, that is, simply making articles interesting and only having a very minimal footnote about the publishing platform.

Then there's the fact that I can't even invite people to join a psychology group, only Hive as a general thing. In this day and age, most people want another social media platform about like they want an additional hole in the head! And Hive is not an easy one to use.

Meanwhile, I am studiously avoiding the whole issue of rewards. With the value of HIVE as low as it is, following the recent flash crash, I don't see the point of upselling a feature that's a bit dubious at the moment. Our rewards are more like a side benefit than anything else.

Just "thinking out loud" here.

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your week!

Comments, feedback and other interaction is invited and welcomed! Because — after all — SOCIAL content is about interacting, right? Leave a comment — share your experiences — be part of the conversation! I do my best to answer comments, even if it sometimes takes a few days!

If you're a blogger, writer, poet, artist, vlogger, musician or other creative content wizard, come join us! Hive is a little "different" because it's not run by a "company;" it operates via the consensus of its users and your content can't be banned, censored, taken down or demonetized. And that COUNTS for something, in these uncertain times! So if you're ready for the next generation of social content where YOU retain ownership and control, come by and learn about Hive and make an account!

Love the self-restraint! 😂 Finding the sweet spot for content is a universal struggle! Keep sharing! 👍

I always thought of any rewards here as a side effect rather than the primary draw.

I'm guessing well above psychology, we see pornography, propaganda, and piracy. Do the rest of the top 10 also start with 'p' to maintain the alliteration?
