Sunday Reflection: Establishing and Adhering to Our Priorities

in Silver Bloggers2 years ago

Recently, it has felt like I have been a less frequent "guest" on these pages.

Truth is, there are other things in life that have been clamoring for my attention more loudly than keeping up with a Hive blog.

But what could be more important than Hive?!?!?

Well, lots of things, like houseguests and family and holiday weekends. I know I often talk about the importance of "showing up every day" as an important strategy for building an account and presence in this community.

But what are your true priorities?

I had a birthday, and we had houseguests, and now we have family staying. I have very little "spare" time on my hands.

This afternoon — while cleaning the kitchen — I found myself contemplating the life of the self-employed person. I know quite a few other people who are self-employed, and maybe it's just the particular circle in which I run, but most of them are locked in an almost perpetual battle to merely make ends meet.

Which brings us back to priorities.

What do we prioritize, in our lives? Do we lock ourselves in an eternal quest to accumulate riches at any cost? Or is part of the "freedom" of the self-employed that we get to take liberties people in regular jobs do not, such as not showing up for work, when we have houseguests and family visiting?

Choices have consequences, of course.

Doing what I do for a living, I am well aware that the consequences of not being a 70-hour a week workaholic is that I will spend my life in various stages of poverty and near-poverty.

But I accept those consequences, even if I don't necessarily like them. Life is too interesting and has too many other possibilities to lock myself into the eternal treadmill of seeking success.

My priorities are that I'll take time to hang out with the family, when they take the time and effort to be here.

Lately, I have also been away from here because of the pressing need to pay bills... combined with the fact that — much as I'd like to think otherwise — I really can't justify calling Hive a "part time job."

Let's face it, regardless of what grand dreams some people might have, this is really more of an opportunity to slowly SAVE and build wealth than to "make money." At least that's how I see it.

If I didn't enjoy blogging/writing, and interacting with the community... chances are I would not be here. Given the hours I spend here, I could easily make 3-4 times as much, giving those hours to my "regular" work.

Which brings is back to what our true priorities are. It's definitely something worth establishing!

Thanks for reading, and enjoy your Labor Day!
