Friday Files - bits and bakes

As usual, Friday was in the kitchen. It was supposed to have been a lighter day. It was, as far as cooking was concerned. It didn't stop the interruptions and I ended up in my usual time crunch. I guess it's that what happens when you think you can take it easy. That said, I did help a somewhat technically phobic friend sort his online visa application: from my weekend office.

Friday's often about baking. This week was no different and included heating up a frozen sourdough bread from a couple of weeks ago, for lunch. If you look closely, you might just see steam.

Then this week's sourdough buns - the best I've made in a while - and butternut for the popular Moroccan roasted butternut soup.

It plays well with the fresh cottage cheese which has been hanging for a couple of weeks and is lovely an "blocky".

This was last night's sunset. I'm treasuring this view from our gate. While I can. Building has started in that space, and besides the noise associated with a new build (the third year in a row that we're having to endure that), I'm already grieving for the space and that view. Even if we can see the mountains, it'll never be the same. It's the price of progress. Call me an old f*rt, but I don't like it. Be warned: I'm not going to hide my irritation with this and will be venting my spleen from time to time...

After our mandatory Friday pub stop, it was back home. Let me explain first: the pub stop is less about the booze as it is about forcing me to be done in the kitchen by a particular time, and escaping the cabin before the fever gets too much. Supper's always easy prepared mostly prepared in advance so that when we get home, the lamb pies went in the oven with some pre-roasted butternut that needed to be heated up. A good end to the week and ahead of Saturday's market.

Enjoy the view for as long as possible, development is driving many crazy, where we once lived in a quiet spot someone will decide to arrive and wreck it with new....

Your food preparation always appears delicious, fortunately no way to drive us mad with the smell to top it off!

You're from McGregor? I assume you know Steve Van Schaik and Megan who run "The Courtyard" venue?

I also have another friend, and architect named Michael, who has fallen in love with McGregor and recently relocated there. Is the town small enough that you would know who I'm talking about? I've only been to McGregor once but I loved it!

Yes, I know Meg & Steve, but not Michael that I am aware of. We have had a huge influx of new people, many of whom we haven't met.

Hi! I see @zakludick got there ahead of me... but as well as introducing me to HIVE, he's a great supporter of the music that @clairemobey and I are making, recording and performing live at the moment!

Great stuff. And some of the folk you mention in your post, I remember hearing at the Barleycorn...a million years ago!!

The Barleycorn is still going strong after all these years! My parents used to enjoy going before I was born, and then I used to be on the committee helping set up stage and finding the odd line-up for the evening when I was an MSc Student! They are now based at Villagers in Claremont! @Clairemobey and I did our second gig there, and the gig we've just posted about now is our third together. We will definitely be going back to Barleycorn and Bill Knight's Cottage Club, as well as some other venues that would suit us!

Wow! They were at the Riverclub when we used to go. More than 20 years ago. I shall check put your posts!

PS @Zakludick, one day @Clairemobey and I can try play in McGregor, at The Courtyard! We can put it on the list of goals!

You know, in the 20+ years I lived in Cape Town, I never had a Gatsby!

🤣🤣🤣 Well... That depends now... do you eat fries?(slap chips)

Its kind of a messy take-away meal at times. Not something that fits with a fancy dinner, but a casual treat that can be shared. You can either ask for the gatsby to be cut in half or quarters or keep a knife handy when eating one.

It is very filling and a bit of a "bek rekker", like a burger.

I think it's all those carbs! Just contemplating that and I feel them on my hips and waistline!😱🤣

I try not to eat stuff like that unless I have intense physical exertion in the same time-frame.

I mean, I am fat, but I am not stupid!

Thank you. Perhaps. We're not sure especially as there was a mountain bike race through the village and which nobody - not even the Tourism office or the winery where it ended, knew about it!

Well damn, you would have thought the organisers of the bike race would have told somebody. Communication what's that 🤣
