On one hand, a degree of anonymity can be essential. There are antisocial people who are willing to use coercion and violence against those who dare disagree. Governments also often punish people for unapproved opinions even now. On the other hand, I can see the benefit of verifiable identity on a platform like Facebook or Twitter where people claim to be specific individuals.

I think there is a place for more anonymous forums, psudoanonymous blockchains, and verified IDs. The real concern is what companies like Facebook and Twitter do with the information they mine from their users, to whom they sell it, and how intertwined they are with governments.
