I think it's less "the clock is running out" and more "Compared to how long I've been here overall." Take holidays and birthdays. When you are young, you have experienced so few of them that they each have huge significance. As you age, they may remain significant, but you have more for comparison, and the stretch to the next is a much smaller fraction of the number already seen.
