I've concluded most people don't want to actually think about things. Research is hard. Nuance is annoying. So much easier to jump on a bandwagon and cheer for something that feels good, especially if it tickles your ego by feeding your prejudices. Political party positions, celebrity gossip, and sports scores require nothing of you except cheers and jeers on cue.
