Have more fun, worry less

Before talking about the hobbies I had or have, I would like to mention the ones I would have liked to have, but never did, perhaps due to a lack of money, skills, or even someone to support me. For example, I would have liked to play a musical instrument, such as the guitar, violin, flute, or piano. I would also have liked to sew and knit like my mother, but following instructions is not my thing. Likewise, I would have liked to know how to ride a bike, and although I played soccer at school, I would have liked to have continued training, not to pass a class, but for the sheer pleasure of doing so.

Having clarified that important and enlightening step, I must say that when I was a little girl, my favorite hobby was playing with my dolls and creating a fictional life for them, full of luxuries and wonderful things, far from the walls of my home, perhaps as a way of creating the life I myself would have liked to live. I was very skilled at creating names and stories, so my friends always sought me out to play. It was a lot of fun because, depending on the dolls' features, they could be princesses, stepmothers, and even witches.

Another thing I did was draw. I could draw while watching classes and even when I was being scolded. I used drawing to create, but also to escape. My parents often confiscated my crayons because I wasn't paying attention. In fact, when I was in fourth grade and about 10 years old, I won a free five-month painting course, but my parents wouldn't let me accept the prize because, according to them, it would distract me from my studies and because “drawing” didn't make money. I still draw today. I'm not a professional, and I don't use any particular technique. I just do it to de-stress and pass the time.

At some point, I don't know when, I found great pleasure in reading. At first, I only read romance novels, which I would sneak away from my parents; but then I started reading everything, and reading opened up another wonderful universe: that of writing. Reading and writing, as hobbies, helped me develop not only my creativity but also my imagination. What I once did with my dolls became the best pastime of all: I began to create characters, stories, and lives on paper that were born in my mind and then I could bring them to life with a pencil. I still play at creating lives and have a lot of fun doing it.

For a time, after graduating and living an independent and financially comfortable life, I became passionate about traveling. Discovering new places and delighting in new flavors brought me true joy. I lived and worked for that sole purpose: to travel. Every weekend or every month, I would visit a new city or a remote village. I paid close attention to recommendations from other travelers, travel agencies, and television programs. I enjoyed staying in a luxurious hotel as much as I enjoyed staying in a humble inn; eating at a trendy restaurant as much as going to the market and eating popular food. This hobby was expensive but rewarding, so much so that as I write, I remember that time and I am happy. I hope that the economic and political situation in my country, Venezuela, improves soon so that I can resume the journey that I had to leave behind for reasons beyond my control.

I think that in the world we live in, it is urgent that we have hobbies, but not to monetize them or profit from them, but because we like them, because we enjoy doing them. A hobby serves to separate us from the rest, but also to unite us; to find ourselves, but also to lose ourselves, to listen to each other, to have fun: to be happy like when we were children.

To win a 5 month free painting course shows how good and creative you were with drawing. I've always wanted to learn how to ride a bike, but fear was my major problem 😕

¡Felicitaciones!
