The Silverbloggers Chronicles - Prompt #21 - My Pastimes / My Passions (En-Es)

Greetings, Silvers. Thank you for this opportunity to reminisce about a beautiful and wholesome time for me.

I was a quiet child who enjoyed playing with my friends in my house's patio. My brother, on the other hand, was rarely around and liked climbing trees, going to the nearby sea, and playing cops and robbers. The photo I'm sharing here, where he appears very small next to my dolls, was purely by chance.

In retrospect, I can perceive traits of my personality that were manifesting in those years. For example, I designed and sewed clothes for my dolls. Whether it was with paper dolls and their cut-out clothes that appeared in the magazines of the time (Cuquitas) or the ones I created myself.

Although I didn't pursue that field professionally,I almost always make my own alterations to the clothes I buy. I also visit seamstresses and place orders with them. That's how I've been all my life.

Some of my other favorite pastimes were related to stationery—perhaps that's where Journalism was born—and playing teacher, which later evolved into being a university professor. Also, my passion for reading began at that time.

My parents bought me children's books.Back then in Cuba, they were very cheap, colorful, and of luxurious quality. However, an aunt kept detective novels in a box, and I would occasionally read one of those alongside my children's texts.

I also still keep solving puzzles among my hobbies. When I started my own business, creating and selling jigsaw puzzles was an idea I haven't completely dismissed.

The most adventurous things I did in my childhood were learning to ride a bicycle and to swim.I consider these actions fundamental life skills we should acquire in childhood. Later, it's more complex to learn them, and they are always useful.

I should note that my generation, born in Cuba in the 1970s, accessed toys through the ration book. In the summer, they were distributed throughout the country, and each child was only entitled to three toys from different categories.

The most abundant toys were Parcheesi, pick-up sticks, and jacks, which almost all of us managed to buy. Bicycles, dolls, and others were difficult to acquire. Around that time, I learned to play chess.

Every Sunday morning,I went to the matinée shows at my town's cinema. They didn't just show cartoons, but also adventure films, westerns, and many from the socialist bloc.

The most popular and accessible pastimes for children in my country were traditional games, as a form of socialization in the neighborhood. They were part of the tradition.

Similarly, flying kites or playing marbles would come into fashion seasonally, and have survived to this day.

World Cup soccer matches or major sports competitions weren't broadcast here, except for the Olympics and others where Cuba had representation.

Childhood pastimes often depend on the environment where we are born and the local idiosyncrasies. But they are closely related to the context in which we grow up and who we become later.

The Silverbloggers Chronicles - Prompt #21 - My Pastimes / My Passions

Saludos silvers.

Mis padres me compraban libros infantiles.

I am very interested in hearing stories about life in Cuba coming from a Cuban. I haven't been there since the 1990's but there is a special place in my heart for this beautiful land. Pastimes and passions may be quite different then that of someone from Canada where I grew up.

Greetings.

Thank you for the opportunity and support.

Hi @neysi71, I also played marbles when I was a kid and kept them in a soda bottle. Riding a bike is fun; I learned when I was little. Nighttime was my favorite time to ride—the cool breeze and the empty street were perfect for racing. My sisters and my mom always came with me on those nighttime rides.

Happy weekend!
