Buck in the Yard

Recently a fine specimen of a white tail deer paid us a visit. The following are a few pictures and a video of the encounter.

biy-20.JPGNot wanting to spook him I started out in the house with my phone camera. Here I am peeking around the curtain to get my first shots.

biy-19.JPGLike I said a fine specimen. A nice symmetrical rack with outstanding muscle definition.

biy-21.JPGAs I realized he didn't care about me standing in the window a few feet from him...

biy-22.JPGI was able to get a couple more shots zoomed in.

I moved to another window to capture some video. As of this writing this is my most popular short on YouTube at 2.3k views. Since he had his head down grazing most of the time this video also contains the best shot of him with his head up facing the camera.

biy-1.JPGAfter about 30 minutes I was back sitting at my computer when I looked out the window and noticed he was now in the front yard grazing.

biy-2.JPGI decided to grab my Nikon with the zoom lens and head outside to try to get some more shots. Again though, he seemed hardly perturbed by my presence photographing him.

biy-3.JPGFinally, I think I strayed a little too close and he decided to move on

biy-4.JPGHe spent nearly an hour foraging around the yard. A good meal for him indeed.

biy-5.JPGAnd ever the smart deer he looked both ways before crossing the road. 🤣

It's a good thing they appear docile. Those antlers are looking big.

Yeah, he seemed pretty calm and didn't seem to care about me but he was a big boy and I didn't want to get too close to him. 😅

I get the feeling they're friendly up to a certain point that one wouldn't want to find out :)

My thought exactly.

Definitely a fine specimen. I guess the deer is used to being around people quite often. Roaming around in everyone's yards.

It's weird we don't see these bigger types in our little compound very often. Mostly just females and small bucks. We are surrounded by thousands of acres of forest land and it is hunting season. Maybe he came in to get away from the hunting pressure or he might have been born here and returned to a safety spot. just my guess. 🤷‍♂ 🙂

Ah oke, it's possible. Well, for the sake of this beautiful one. I hope it will not get hunted this year, at least.

Nice shots! And lucky you that you have such a yard!
