Here we see a Moorhen mother defending her young - you wouln'd believe how fierce they can get. The stupid Mallard cock tried to attack the little chick - for reasons I don't understand, since they wouldn't eat them or so - and despite being bigger and heavier regretted it at once!

Exactly. Moorhens may look a bit funny, but they have strong legs and big feet with claws, much like a domestic chicken. And they know how to use them. The duck didn't want to find out how and quickly retreated. :)
It surprised me to see this, usually they (the different birds) ignore each other.
