All the delightful sights, sounds and scents of Spring fill the air - BUT IT'S WINTER!
Wait?! WHAT?!!! Birds are frantically darting between nest and foraging to feed hatchlings. The delicate pink and white blossoms of the fruit trees nod in the breeze. It's a total confusion of seasons. The air is chilly. But not a real winter chill. While it is beautiful to see all the new life it is also disconcerting. Where will we be in a month? Will fruit blossoms, summer seedlings and those tiny fledglings survive through winter - when it really hits with all its icy ferocity? For now we savour the beauty of new life.
This week's birding contest inspired by @nelinoeva is Nesting SMaP 114 . And how do I choose of all the unique nesting options?
The incredible architectural mud feit of the swallows and little martens decorate many rooving structures on our homestead. Then there's the huge and messy construction by sparrows who use every imaginable object, natural and man-made, to build their nests.
One of my favourites is the home built by our malachite sunbirds in the cactus. As mama sunbird peeps expectantly out on the world she incubates her eggs and awaits warmer weather. It may not come but hope is strong in the face of the impossible.

These photographs are fabulous! My goodness, you are so good at photographing nature, and at talking about it.
I hope the coming weather is warm enough for all these lovelies to thrive. With so many of them nesting now, I like to believe they know better than we humans do, weather-wise.
Oh thank you for such a sweet comment. I must admit, while I have always loved photography and nature, I've only really become devoted to birds in our homesteading life.
A lovely post and well done with the photography!
Oh thank you. It's always special to grab one of those intimate bird shots of their family life
Yep! A very peaceful and at the same time special feeling to see those sights.
Weather is really crazy and I can imagine how confused the birds can be.
I hope their hatchlings and fledglings will survive.
As always I am impressed how creative the birds are. I also see manmade materials in the nests here. But to build the house in the cactus - this is really clever. I remember from your previous posts about these clever malachite sunbirds, using the cactus against the predators.
Thank you! It is very clever of them. Apparently location is everything😎 And the cactus seems to be a favourite location of choice for the malachite sunbirds
