THE EPIPHANY
Since I was little, I was intrigued by the fact that ships, being so enormous, floated. I watched movies about pirates and corsairs with their cannons and numerous crews, and I was disconcerted by so much weight without sinking to the bottom.
My dad didn't help me explain that they were made of wood and that this ship floats. I've tried to move a tree trunk, and the wood still seems extremely heavy, unlike the lightness with which ships sail.
Then I heard, I saw, birds singing, flying, nesting in the branches, and I understood where ships get their lightness.
Before they were on the high seas, they sailed the skies; they had flight by imitation and custom, freedom by habit and inheritance. Dolphins chased them, following the chorus of sweet trills tattooed on the wood. Sailors took the ship as their home because the tree knew it was also born as a nest.
Since then, every ship I saw carries flight and melody for me.
THE MATERIALS
I used few, simple resources, within everyone's reach.
- Sheets of paper
- Colored pencil (blue)
- White glue
- Paintbrush
- Pigeon feathers
THE WORK
To illustrate the thesis I just outlined, I used a simple paper modeling technique and inlaid with natural elements.
I started by making an origami paper boat, one of those traditional ones we played with as children. But I'll leave you with the modeling process step by step in case you don't master it.
I covered the surface of the boat with white glue using a brush and glued the feathers on.
I colored the other sheet of paper to serve as the background for my boat and glued it on it.
And this is how my ship turned out (did you notice that even that word contains the winged name?) I hope you like it.

LA EPIFANÍA
Desde pequeña me llamaba la atención que los barcos, siendo tan enormes, flotaran. Veía las películas de piratas y corsarios con sus cañones, sus numerosas tripulaciones y me desconcertaba tanto peso sin hundirse hasta lo profundo.
No valió que mi papá me explicara que estaban hechos de madera y que esta flota. He intentado mover un tronco de árbol y la madera me sigue pareciendo pesada en extremo, ajena a la ligereza con que navegan los barcos.
Entonces escuché, vi, pájaros cantando, volando, anidando en las ramas y comprendí de dónde sacan su ligereza los barcos.
Antes de estar en alta mar, han surcado los cielos, tienen por imitación y costumbre el vuelo, por hábito y herencia la libertad. Los persiguen delfines siguiendo el coro de dulces trinos tatuados en la madera. Los marineros toman el barco por hogar porque el árbol sabe que nació también para nido.
Desde entonces cada barco que veo lleva para mí vuelo y melodía.
LOS MATERIALES
Utilicé pocos y sencillos recursos, al alcance de cualquiera.
- Hojas de papel
- Lápiz de color (azul)
- Cola blanca
- Pincel
- Plumas de palomas
EL TRABAJO
Para ilustrar la tesis que les acabo de exponer recurrí a una sencilla técnica de modelado en papel e incrustación de elementos naturales.
Comencé haciendo un origami de un barquito de papel, de esos de toda la vida con que jugábamos de niños. Pero igual les dejo el proceso de modelado paso a paso en caso de que no lo dominen.
La superficie del barquito la cubrí de cola blanca con ayuda del pincel y fui pegando las plumas.
Di color a la otra hoja de papel para que sirviera de fondo a mi barco y lo pegué en ella.
Y así quedó mi nave (¿ya notaron que hasta esa palabra contiene el nombre alado?) Espero les guste.
