Great spotted woodpecker feeding the offspring

When i visited Vienna in Spring 2019 together with Stefan and Tanja, Tanja found a hole with a woodpecker where the adult birds were feeding their offspring and since they were pretty busy we were able to get some nice shots of them. It was pretty nice watching them and I took several pictures of these beautiful birds. Every time when I see something like this, it reminds me how beautiful nature is and how lucky we are to live in a country where it is possible to discover all this beauty.

The great spotted woodpecker is omnivorous. It digs beetle larvae from trees and also takes many other invertebrates including adult beetles, ants and spiders. What ever they found nearby they brought to the hole with their little bird babies and fed it to them. And again this pictures where made at the Central Cemetery in Vienna. I am always pretty surprised how much urban wildlife exist there. Even though Vienna is one of the biggest Cities in Europe you can find a lot of places where animals and the nature still has enough space to blossom.

Yeah its amazing how much you can discover when people take time to just look around and find things like this. Great Photos 👍

Thank you, it was luck that my friend saw it because i probably wouldn't have found it.

Ah so fabulous! Thanks for sharing these delightful photos!

Woodpecker are in our garden during winter time - we feed them with smearing shortening + seeds on some trees.

👍Great pictures! I also observed such a picture in the summer, it is a pity that I could not photograph because of the shadows and inconvenient location.

Yes sometimes a lot of luck is involved

These are really wonderful photos! Certainly not something you have the opportunity to see often! Thanks for sharing these with us
