Night herons hiding in the trees and drinking water at the pond

During my several trips to the Inn River in Upper Austria I was able to take a lot of different pictures of birds that I found up there. It is a really nice spot for birding and wildife photorgraphers like me and nearly on every trip up there I was able to take at least one nice picture of birds. Stefan and I found a great spot where we can get pretty close to a sleeping colony of night herons. They sleep and rest at a small pond and I like to visit it very much although there are a lot of mosquitoes around when the wheather conditions are not perfect. One time we got close to the spot but had to retreat because of all the mosquitoes eating us up. Mosquito spray is useless in such a place because some times the mosquitoes are in such a blood thirst that they don't care about any of the sprays you use.

This is not only a great spot for night herons but also for other birds like the kingfisher. I regularly find a kingfisher there and also took some pictures of it. Also colorful dragonflies chill at the small pond and fly from one spot to another, but when it is hot they are very active and getting close to them is not easy. I with I can get some Macro shots of a nice dragonfly maybe next year but until now I had to use the 150-600 mm lens for trying to get some closer shots, because every time I got to close to them they flew away.

I like the nice red color of the eye from the herons.

This looks really beautiful. I think the night heron has a most brilliant kind of grace to it, even though it looks still from the angle I saw it. Good luck getting macro shots of the dragonflies. 🌺

Such an interesting heron. It is unusual in appearance, and the fact that it is not in the water itself, but above the water.
