On my trip to the Island of Helgoland in the Northern Part of Germany I did several nice pictures of the Northern Gannets, a very beautiful bird living and breeding there. Helgoland is one of the few breeding spots of the birds. When we visited this place in Spring 2018, they were preparing their nest and where in the breeding season. It was very nice watching them doing their love game with their peaks and they where also mating.

Another spectacular thing to watch was when one of the birds was looking for nesting material while the other one was watching the nest spot. Because several nest spots where not the same quality there was a bit of a fight for the best spots on the ground. And sometimes the birds got really rough on each other. But most of the time it was a pleasure watching them. Because they know humans are no thread for them there, they didn't bother us so much and we where really able to get very close to them.
In Helgoland there is a fence some meters from their breeding spots to stop people coming too close, but the birds where literaly only a few centimeters from the fence away.

Visiting Helgoland was a dream of Tanja a photography friend of mine and together with Stefan we visited this Island for 5 days. You can find a lot of different birds there because for migrating birds this island is a nice spot to take a short rest to keep on flying to the next land.
When we got to the Northern Gannets in the Morning we had the luck that the sun created very nice flares like in the next picture. The reflection of the sun on the water surface of the ocean creates these nice light balls in the lens.

Bravo!
